83 mpg

Twice now my AL7 has done 83 mpg, I thought the first time was a fluke but then I repeated it. This is travelling at the speed limits, average acceleration and it's just had its 15k service.

I wonder if 90 mpg would be achievable with hypermiling techniques although coasting downhill in neutral wouldn't be possible.

My second bike back in 1972 was a Honda CB175 and it would "only" do 80 mpg. I think the SV650 engine is a marvel (especially since it was originally designed as the SV400).

I regularly get mid 70's and have had near 80, but it is hard in Shropshire with our hills. I agree the new SV engine is a marvel of efficiency and even 'making progress' is capable of really good MPG.

thats impressive. is that over a tank full or between fill ups?

best i have had is 69mpg from 20ltr. the avg is 63 mpg over 7 years of keeping a spreadsheet.

I put it down in part to the cylinder capacities being of optimum size and shape. I have a theory (amongst many) that once a cylinder gets too big or out of shape the combustion is less efficient and of course if smaller you have to have more or rev higher to get the same power which again is inefficient

My old curvy used to do about 50+ mpg out of town.
It was of course much better looking so entitled to use a bit more fuel.
I once had a CB175 as well. It broke a gearbox selector fork and cooked an alternator but it was quicker than my BSA Bantam. As was walking.

I read an article by a Honda engineer many years ago that 325 to 375 cc is optimum for efficient filling and combustion.

The twin spark plugs on Gladius and AL7 may also help ( lighting the fire in two places instead of one) and other tricks like low friction SCEM cylinder bore coating ( and of course molyslip in my AL7 ) all help.

Some fantastic MPG figures there.I think the best I got on me old Curvy was around 60 Mpg but haven't done one for a while.I get around 150+ before my low fuel light comes on and that's fine by be as it's better than my old Honda 500s.

I frequently get to very near the 200 mile mark on my curvy before I fill up. The light almost never flashes before 185 miles and I have seen 205 miles on the clock a couple of times before I've chickened out and refilled.
