Ditching RAC - but who to go with?

OMO One for the collective experiences. Although it may be a bit of a can of worms along the lines of tyre recommendations...

I have been with the RAC now for about 30 years and have put up with ever rising premiums (despite very infrequent callouts) and earlier this year some truly rubbish service. So I've decided to take my hard earned elsewhere for rescue/recovery/at-home. But where?

Who's had genuine and consistently good experiences and who was it with?

I don't know if they do repairs at the roadside, but Carole Nash has rescued me a few times. A couple of breakdowns and one or two punctures. It's included in the premium so totally worth it for me.

Autoaid. Less than £50 a year for home and roadside, and they will cover you in any vehicle so it includes car and bike. Oh and spouse cover is included too. In the past it was a 'pay and reclaim' type policy but that's changed and they cover all the costs now.
I used them once when the SV packed up and they sent a specialist bike repairer with van who couldn't fix it and so took both me and bike home.

My only word of warning is that the alternatives to the likes of RAC and the AA often are franchised to local garages. I can't help but think that they might have a vested interest in only towing you to their garage not fixing on the roadside.

In the past I've used Green flag which were franchised and good - but may have changed now.

RAC which were good and got the bike back to the dealer for me - RR on the triple.

I'm now with Auto aid and they will take you home, not just a garage if they can't fix it. Maybe honest up front with them so they don't try and get you to their place?


Not all of them do accident recovery.

Avoid AA, that's all I can tell you, if you think RAC were bad (who have been good for me in the past) then you'd be in for a nasty surprise. RAC premiums are high though, massive introductory offers, bit cheeky if they already have your business but don't give a discount!

Whatever happened to no claim discounts from AA, RAC etc. The AA (have it mainly for my wifes benefit) will often 'add' relay to our cover for a couple of months before renewal is due for say £10 extra - but if you take it and don't cancel it you end up with Relay at full price when they renew - a bit sneaky really. Considering we have been members since Adam was a little boy and have only had one or two callouts at home (my wife flattened her car battery while I was working away from home many years ago) we never get offered a discount.

I use Britannia Rescue. Just the basic get me home service. Far cheaper than the big 2 and it gets good reviews.

their vehicle cover looks good. main point i can see is accident recovery as standard. the RAC and AA wont do this even if you just drop the bike and break a lever.

i had to use bikesures breakdown cover last year after i crashed the bike and while i never got charged it was a complete mess. 4+ fekin hrs stood at the side of the road in the pizzing rain. was supposed to get a taxi to take me home, in the end i phoned the mate to pick me up and told the taxi to go do one. was not a nice experience.

Thanks, just taken out cover with Autoaid. I was with Rescuemycar.com, but it was £52 just for me only,just the car, not the bike.

When I rang RAC to cancel my auto-renew they were very rude about all other recovery services. Made me more glad to be leaving them.

Every policy i have had adds it on for about a tenner and I think the last time i needed a recovery was 12 years ago when i still had the SV and that was just for a nail in the front tyre
