View Full Version : Handguards for 2016-
Hi
I'm looking for a recommendation for handguards please. For the new model SV.
I already have Oxford Heated Grips, which have the wires on the inside of the grip and those need to turn. So I think handguards would need to be the bar end only ones.
I want them to block wind, more than for crash protection, so generic/budget is fine.
Most of the ones I've found want to attach on the inside too. Oxford have some but they are both pricey and ugly... Barkbuster Storm looks fine, but £85....
Thanks

Acerbis makes some quite nice but they're also a bit pricey, on the other hand you can always look for the Chinese copy on ali

You might not like the cheap-and-cheerful ones I fitted to my Curvy,

£10 ish.

As they are universal had to do a but of pushing, bending and a little fettling of the metal arm bracket to get them to fit but nothing hard to do.

Second the acerbis had some fitted too my old CCM good kit.
Thanks guys.
I saw lots looking like those riff raff. They look ok, great for the price. but I think they'd interfere with the other kit (or too much work). I don't think the other suzuki ones will just plug in. Good tip but no joy on ali express. but by searching x-tarmac on eBay, rather than acerbis there are a couple of cheaper acerbis style ones. Might go for those. I thought there would be more about. Plenty with different fixings, but not bar end only. Cheers

I have bigger handguards on one of my bikes, TBH the wind protection is not brilliant. For real cold weather, heated grips and muffs are brilliant.
The grips cables wont cause any hassle with any type of hand guard.

try alchemy, i have some alchemy bar end only ones on my 2016 AL7, the bar adaptor was a bit small and I had to modify, also had to space them out slightly to stop them interfering with brake lever, they have LED daylight running lights included if you want to connect them up, I didn't bother because I have a couple of 10watt alchemy LED spotlights mounted on handlebars which make me highly visible ( https://www.alchemyparts.co.uk/universal-high-quality-super-bright-10w-cree-led-spotlights-with-aluminium-housing-for-motorbikes-motorcycles-cars-trikes-quads/ I just made a flat bracket to fit under handlebar mirror mounting and bolted bracket straight on - will post a picture if you want one - also got a handlebar switch that matches the other Suzuki stuff spot on https://www.alchemyparts.co.uk/wiring-kits-switches-connectors/?sort=featured&page=2 ).
they have plenty of choice anyway. if you hover mouse pointer over the images more information including dimensions is revealed - very useful
I've gone for the Oxfords. If they are particularly good or bad, I'll report back. Thanks
Yes, those ones.
Reporting back.....
They look ok, pretty good actually, and better than the picture online.
But they don't seem to do anything beneficial. They also don't stay in place (ie they swivel around). Because of the bar end only fixing, I suppose. The bar end is not as good as the stock bar end mechanism (and they don't work as well using those parts). I could superglue them in place, but I didn't really want to.

The whole bar end, not the screw. The screw just turns but doesn't tighten any more.
I've emailed Oxford. Good suggestion and worth a go. They are not the retailer though (they don't sell direct).
They could go closer (they are adjustable) but the levers stick out too far for that.

I found the same on my (different make) handguards, there does not seem enough expansion when you tighten the screw and / or the rubber insert is too soft, either way the screw can bottom out. I replaced the supplied insert with some hard garden hose (which seemed to be the correct size) and they are quite firm now.
These ones don't actually have a rubber part. It is a screw into a cylindrical nut which tightens into (ie expands) a metal tube with slits in. The slits are supposed to allow that end to expand, but not enough (plus metal on metal doesn't hold as well are rubber on metal).

The problem maybe that the bit with the splits in is only expanding on the very inner end (especially if the expansion nut has a steep angle on it ) - a bit of rubber or tape gives a bit of compressability to the system and evens out the contact arear rather than just being point contact.

Looks just like a Hilti expanding anchor fixing to me. Should be able to tighten right up, but it won't undo without a tap with a hammer and drift.

How good is the fit between inside diameter of your handlebars and unexpanded diameter of the fixing ? Any gap will limit the amount of contact between inside of bars and the expanding part, and being smooth metal on smooth metal won't give a good grip. If there is a gap you will also need to pull the tapered nut further into the slotted bit, and will run out of thread, so bolt will lock up without fixing the handguards firmly.

I use the givi handguards, don't give great protection from wind but they help a lot in the rain so the gloves get less wet

Took them off. The innards, just FYI (a bit bashed from the removal).

That kind of leverage is asking way too much of those bar bungs. It's a bad design IMO
If there is enough clearance between the outer slotted sleeve & the handlebar you could glue thin strips of rubber to the outer sleeve. That would give some purchase to help stop the slipping.
Update.
So, I complained to Oxford and after some detailed discussion they gave me the value as a credit on their website (with free delivery). So can't fault that service.
Separately I got RiffRaff's cheap chinese ones. They seem better. Not fitted yet as they wont fit on the clutch side without a different bracket. I need to find or adapt one. They will work with the stock bar ends if I can sort the bracket on the other end (Its supposed to fit to the mirror stalk but it doesn't reach on mine).

I just had to make the elongated hole a bit bigger in the little metal bracket on the clutch side so the Clutch lever bot could go through?
I'm sure you can come up with something :)
BTW.If you can get them to fit they are superb and way better than a lot of expensive Branded ones.I get no Wind on my hands even @ 70 Mph etc and the reflective strips are a nice touch.
