Curvy rear subframe removal

Hi, I'm sorry if this has already been asked and answered.

I have a SV650S year 2000, the bike is standard as far as I can tell. The rear frame where the seats are fixed is in need of cleaning up to deal with rust. I've stripped the frame of all fairings, disconnected the wiring, removed the brake master cylinder and dropped the tray. I've still got to remove the passenger foot pegs.

My questions are is there any problems with removing the rear sub frame from the main frame and reinstalling it?

Can I leave the petrol tank installed whilst I have the rear frame off? It'll be off for 1 or 2 days and the bike will be on its side stand the exhaust silencer will be supported.

Yes those subframes rust a fair bit. I've had the seat mount snap a couple of times, but this is a simple weld fix. The tubes where there are bungee points are horrific. I've wired brushed them in the past and followed up with Hammerite and while its fine from a far they don't have a smooth finish as originally, I think this will take a lot of sanding work to achieve.

As for any problems removing and installing, nope not really. Just the usual corrosion on threads that can make it more work than it should, just be careful of what anyone else has done before on the bike and those pillion peg bolts can be fun so make sure you've got the right size socket and that you are seated properly on it.

When I spruced my subframe up, I had it powder coated, which which did make life easier and protected it for ages. Although it looked like it needed redoing around the bungee loops as SH said above.

If getting it powder coated gets some taps to clean out the threads. I once had a bolt stuck in a footrest hanger that could not be removed, I had to cut and drill it out.
