View Full Version : Rite of passage
I was reading an article which triggered memories of being taught a skill and I was curious whether they still teach it.
The skill is is to rescue a rubber brick from the bottom of a swimming pool while wearing pyjamas. Once the brick had been saved you would remove the pyjama trousers, knot the legs, inflate them and use them as a flotation device.
I'm sorry to report that 50 years on, I have yet to rescue my first brick.
There must have been a spate of suicidal rubber bricks back then.

I very rarely remember to take my pyjamas when out near water so I too have been unable to use this valuable skill.

Even training as a lifeguard I never wore my jammies :p
And have you ever tried to give the kiss of life to a rubber brick?;)

I lost my 'Lifesaver' certificates and badges. Which means I'll have to do the courses all over again before I can save a life ...

I rescued that same brick! You'd think it would have learnt it's lesson after the first few times but it sounds like it did a tour of every swimming pool in the country and still kept falling in.

In our pool the brick got thrown in, whatever happened to 'rubber brick rights' ? Seems they have nobody to protect them from being thrown into pools at the whim of some human, look out for an EU directive soon from some bored civil servant, ( after a 500 page report has been compiled of course )..

Yes, we did this when I was at school. Came very handy later in life after embarking on a career as a drug smuggler on one occasion when a heroin brick went over board.

And Me! I think that brick had a death wish.
All in all it was just another brick in the pool.
