In the early 80s, a mate got a '68 TR6, I helped him rebuild the top end (you need four hands to line up the pushrod tubes when you're dropping the head back on). A very nice bike to ride, and actually not really any slower in real terms than the Bonneville.
How fast a 60s / 70s BSA, Triumph or Norton went was more to do with whether you got a 'good one' instead of one made on a Friday afternoon / Monday morning, because the tooling and machinery the engines were manufactured on were so old and worn, they couldn't maintain accuracy to keep new components at a decent tolerance.
I follow the threads on britbike.com and refitting the Triumph push rod tubes does seem to be a faff. Since the tubes are on the outside of the engine, so to speak, they have O rings top and bottom. The head gasket thickness will determine how much these O rings are crushed when the head is torqued so the O rings come in different thicknesses (and materials). Too much or too little crush will result in oil leaks.

Thank you for that Seeker. Loved it. Brought back memories for me riding my old Norton Dominator 88. Carb bolt's threads went on the way back from Whitby one time. Tied the carbs on with some wire and got home :smt077
Also reminded me a bit of the first time I read,"Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance".
