Exhaust Gaskets

Im about to put my exhaust system back on the bike as i removed it to remove the swingarm and fitting the new gaskets which slide over the front and rear downpipe, in the haynes it says to apply exhaust gasket sealant to the gaskets but ive seen people saying just to tighten them up without gasket sealant. There the wire looking mesh ones. Has anyone fitted these exhaust gaskets and did you use any sealant? Thanks

I used a bit of sealant, but only a small amount and it was more to stick the gaskets in place and stop them falling out when I was trying to fit the header.
