Hi all, I am new here. I picked up a 2009 SV650s for $50. I couldnt pass up this deal. The bike has been sitting for about 4 years.

Took the bike home and purchased a new battery. Turned the key ON and saw that the bike has 2000 miles. Tried to crank it and it will turn over, but will not start.

Days later I have cleaned out the tank which had so much rust and gunk. I also installed a new fuel pump. Now it does not prime at all.

I have sprayed starter fluid and the bike will start for a second and shut off. What are some things to look out for?

*This is my second bike. My main bike is a 2015 Zx6r that I stunt.

I am having trouble uploading the pictures of the sv650 I picked up.

The pump does not prime. No fuel is going through. I have checked the relay and fuel pump fuse and it is good.

Hi and welcome to the forum. I’d be inclined to check all the electrical connector blocks, clean and dowse them in switch cleaner and a little ACF50. I’mrubbish with electrics but I would also make sure you have power at the pump.
If the tank was full of corrosion, clean any fuel line filters if fitted, and get the carbs off and clean them out.
Let us know how you get on.

Incidentally, the forums native image upload doesn’t work. Upload any pictures to an image host like Flickr or imgur first then paste the BB code into your post.

Thank you.

I have power at the pump as well as the relay and fuel pump fuse. I am thinking to check the killswitch at the right handlebar and maybe the side stand switch?

Killswitch, clutch switch and side stand switch are all worth checking and cleaning.

Kill switch seems fine. Upon switching the killswitch to on/off the butterflies will move, but the pump is still inactive.

I'm not 100% sure on how to bypass the clutch switch but I think I have the idea to bypass the side stand switch. I will just jump the wires together

Try dousing both clutch and side stand switch in switch cleaner first. There are small openings in both which will allow you to squirt cleaner in using an aerosol straw.

Thank you kind sir. I will try that and report back!

Tried bypassing the side stand switch and clutch switch. Fuel pump still does not prime.

Put it into dealer mode and no errors.
Battery is fully charged and fuel pump is brand new.
Killswitch contacts is cleaned.
Tip sensor is positioned correctly.

Is there a separate fuse for the fuel pump on a pointy SV? I have a curvy so not sure.

Got it running. I AM A COMPLETE IDIOT.

I SHOULD DELETE THIS THREAD LOL. Anyways this is the first sv650 I ever owned. Cant wait to get it Road worthy. I need a new chain now and front and rear brake masters. They are both locked up from sitting for 4 years

Well done! You're not an idiot, it's all a learning experience. So what was the problem?

That is uploading to tapacrap. The forum image hosting has been broken for years, same as avatar changes

I just wired up the fuel incorrectly lol.

Now off to getting a new chain and changing both front and rear brake masters then she should be okay to ride

There's a good breakers in Bristol called Landmark Bikes that often has good condition bits like brakes. I think they sell through eBay. Worth getting a kit with the sprockets in too if you're putting a new chain on.

I would recommend getting the callipers off and cleaning them and the pistons if it’s been stood that long. Gently take the seals out too and check the recesses for corrosion. Replace the seals if necessary and make sure the sliding calliper pins are clean and greased. Put the whole lot back together using red rubber grease. DO NOT use copper slip or moly or anything else other than RRG which is vegetable based and won’t make your seals and rubber boots disintegrate.

If you need some seals I've found a couple of sets in the garage, Suzuki part number 59300-33841, which you can have for the price of postage.

Sold the bike before getting around to using them.

Did the old pump prime and run? If it did, then you can narrow it down to an install error or bad pump out of the box.

You said it has power at the pump. Does it have ground?

Think the OP is Trump side of the pond. But useful for me!

Thanks guys for all the help. I have not logged in for awhile.

This bike is such a blast to ride. I got everything up and running and it is so much more comfortable to ride than my previous zx6r.

The last issue I am facing on my Sv650 is that the tachometer does not work. Everything else seems to function properly like the signal, brights, speedo, but not the rpm. Any ideas?

Thanks!
