View Full Version : electrical issue
Hi, i am having a strange electrical problem. when riding after a few miles my speedo keeps going of for a split second. I also notice at night when it happens the lights also go out at the same time. The tacho doesn't alter and i don't feel that the engine misses. I have tried a replacement battery but it is still doing it.Has anybody else had the same problem. The bike is a 1999 curvy. I had to replace the reg/rec earlier this year but the problem has only started the last 2 months.

First thing I would check is the large Block connector under the tank near the Head-stock. With age all block connectors are prone to corrosion on the spades and sockets. Using a small flat-blade screw driver with some 500 grit wrapped around it I carefully remove all corrosion by scraping and spraying Contact/Switch cleaner on them. When satisfied they are clean metal I blast with some Carb/Brake cleaner(Wilkos Supermarkets good price for a big can) and let evaporate.
I then treat them with ACF50,

Also check the Wiring loom around the front of the bike for chaffing.

+ give the pins a very slight twist with needle nose pliers so they mate well with the other side of the block.

Check the Speedo sensor.
Thanks, I will have to go through the loom this weekend and clean all the connectors one by one. I don't think it's the speedo sensor due to the lights flickering.
Finally think I have got this problem sorted. After cleaning all the connectors on the loom and the earth on the engine and checking the loom for any chafing I found that one of the terminals in the block connector from the reg/rec to the battery for the earth was not latched. So when the connector was pushed together the loose terminal was pushed back and was only touching, causing the intermittent fault. After several hundred miles there hasn't been any more problems.

I hope that is it and glad you found it. I have a pet-hate of Automotive connectors and have hard-wired my Stator and R/R on my SV650. Once Motorcycles come into the 2nd hand market and say after 10 years old the connectors need to be checked and serviced IMHO.
I cover this on my R/R pages,
