I have been a member of this forum for a while and it's not like other bike forums. Why?

1) The Idle Banter part is very active, so much so that it has become a bit like our own social media (no criticism)
2) We are opinionated and argue but never sink to insults
3) We are supportive (see #1)
4) The site remains "alive" even when we can't ride - there hasn't been an "SV" post for 3 days and a "Bike" post for 4 days.
5) I suppose this links to #4 - I'm on other bike sites and they seem dull, yes we discuss the bikes but it's almost like reading a service manual. I don't think I'd class this site as dull ;)
6) We ramble on about many subjects often with many pages - the electric vehicle thread for example, 14 pages so far. I may not always agree but it makes me think.

I guess we're doing it right.

It has ever been this way. There have been a few major dust-ups and a few voted with their feet after being told to moderate their language, but on the whole the "u-rate forum" principle seems to work really well. I haven't had an SV since 2006(?) but would miss this place too much to move on.

Ditto. Most people on here seem to have an open mind and accept that there is an alternative view of the world to their own, which is quite unique on t' interwebs.
There have been a few dramas (i.e. dangerous Dave) but on the whole its pretty harmonious.

Never met anyone from here IRL that I didn't like, how they feel about me may differ [emoji1787]

Few have drifted away over the years, which is a shame.

Also haven't had an SV for 5 years...
Don't really come here for the bike problems.

It's all about the free therapy.
Some of us just happen to ride a bike, and some of them even ride an SV.

Another forum I'm on keeps lurching in and out of civil war and several people have recently been banned. I only go on there now for the one thread I know is only used for jokes and silly pictures, the rest I ignore and I've not posted more than a handful of posts on the entire site all year.

This place by comparison has been far more harmonious, even if the footfall is a bit lower than it used to be. Does not bother me though and like so many I've not had an SV for, oh, must be ten years now.

Like most people I've been on a fair few forums and this is one of the best, all manner of people but all seem to get on with and respect each other which is always a winning recipe.

Theres always been good banter with no one taking stuff too seriously like some one calling me a nob faced nobster and 21Quest regularly referring to me and my riding "style" as ham fisted
And the now infamous I tazered myself post by scoobs ( I think it was scoobs anyway)

Oh and of course meeting the other half on here 16 years ago

I joined in 2019. I think I had a few forays before that but being an occasional rider I never took it any further, never had the need, but in this strange year it has become a source of interest and knowledge. I have a browse at least once a day.
I know a lot of contributors on here have a much greater knowledge of the SV and indeed motorcycles in general, a knowledge which they are only too willing to share, and indeed the various other topics raised. A sincere thank you to them and those that look after the site.

your all a bunch of SLAGZZZ...

some people just can accept being wrong so often fall out with other people who cant be wrong or apologise and thats why i like it here as most people on here will admit to being wrong. besides 99% of the folk on here are sound apart from all those in the ecosse section who are all a bunch of reprobates.....

and this is why we love you Bibs and is one of the reasons I love this place, even if it is far less frequented than it once was, but times do unfortunately move on :(

Haven't had an SV myself for nearly ten years now I reckon :( and have signed up to others for my new bikes, but they're all just total rubbish by comparison and feel like they're full of muppets. I get better advice about my current bike here than I do on the 675 forum I joined!

I agree it's like an oasis is the sea of sludge and abuse that is most internet forums.

I've been around here for over 12 years and it's lacking the volume of activity it was a decade or so ago. So sad that so many have decamped to mainstream social media (e.g. farcebook - I'm also on a couple of 'groups' there but it's nowhere near as useful, fun or easy to use for an ageing luddite like me.) Great that the positive and tolerant culture remains though.

One of the best forums I’ve ever been part of. Don’t want to get too slushy but this has been a place of tech support, useful info, and just lately a place of solace and support. I’ve met and ridden with some lovely folks from here, and look forward to doing so again as soon as possible.
As regards activity, quality beats quantity every time for me.

That’s ok, I still have one and I ride it for every one of you who have drifted away from the one true faith!

I joined in 2015 shortly before getting my first SV, and it's not only been invaluable in terms of tips and advice, but also introduced me to some great people, and I'm looking forward to more rides through the Welsh hinterland :)

I wasn't here in the heyday of 10 years ago, but compared to the Suzuki 2-stroke forums that I was on at the time, this place is still buzzing. The Suzi, Yamaha & Kawasaki 2-stroke forums are dying with an ever-shrinking membership, simply because 70s / 80s strokers are now too expensive for newcomers to buy, restore and run.

I sometimes think there will be a weird & wonderful catalogue of history to this place. It's one of those 'small world' forums , I remember stumbling across the forum a few years before I owned an SV - a guy had posted about a crash he'd been in. After joining and frequenting the forum I noticed the thread on here (always wear your ferkin leathers? some Ape chap). I've also met people off here and ridden with them fairly regularly and then found they knew each other separately from this forum. The dangerousdave episode and other dramas have been pretty priceless and the rideouts were excellent, the AR's are a real achievement for all involved. We probably should express grattitude to John and others who keep the site going in the facebook age more often, the site's definitely not lost it's value.

I've met random people off here and gone round europe/scotland/wales with them. Essentially going on holiday with total strangers and it's always been a good laugh.
I don't know if it's something about the kind of people who opt for an SV (even as a stepping stone bike) but a lot of the forummers seem pretty reasonable...not that I'm saying other models of motorcycles attract nobs (they do though).
Oh and in explanation to the above, I just got offered a horrendously cheap bike after I passed my test and it turned out to be an SV.

You lot here are the best, and have done more for me than i could put into words :smt054 I count you all as family not just friends on a screen. I really miss those we have lost and those who don't post anymore.

Thank you all for being awesome :D

As I said at BPW last year, it's the sense of community that keeps me here, like others I don't even own an SV anymore..

I'm relatively new to this forum but since joining I have learned soooo much about my curvy and all it's foibles, I must have saved an absolute fortune in fixing/servicing bills. Can't thank the peeps enough who have freely given me advice and suggestions when I was having problems.
I also try to give advice (on the problems I have come across and resolved) but tbh ... most peeps here know far more than me about the SV so my input counts for very little but I try.
This is one of the few forums that I have used over the years that has a ...'genuine' feel about it ... if that makes sense, I check on it almost every day just to see whats going on in the world of SV'ing.
It would be awesome if ... in the new year..... there was to be a national SV meet up somewhere in the UK, a bit like those scooter rallies.
Would be great to meet the members on here n put some faces to names.
I'll stop waffling now but just like to say ... excellent forum guys.

Obviously the most valuable piece of information is that the curvy is the good looking one and the pointy fell of the ugly tree and hit all the branches on the way down. [emoji1787]

It’s got to be about time to resurrect the AR hasn’t it? I’ve never made it to one in the nearly eleven years I’ve been here, and I don’t think there’s been one since...when...2015 maybe?

Very true. I also managed to miss them, sadly. Finding someone(s) wth the time and willingness to organise one is probably the biggest hurdle.

Maybe if we can decide in which area or region to hold it, we could put together a group of 6 or 8 people to organise it.

It would be great to bring it back, the biggest problem I seem to remember from the last one was getting a consensus on just about anything.... whoever does organise it, will need a THICK skin and have the ability to say no, this is what we're doing at points....

No "allegedly" about it, just fact.

Iirc ... the blue ones were sold being touted as 2mph faster than the yellow ones, ... this was due to the implementation of ground breaking paint technology from Suzuki achieving 'laminar flow' ... something that formula1 got very interested in soon after.
Or .... I might have just made that up hahaha!
Back on track .... I would be very interested in a meet (national or otherwise) when the weather significantly improves, wouldn't mind doing a couple of hundred miles tbh ( starting from Dover Kent) as long as there's beer n burgers at the venue.

Yeah, we've had some great ARs until we had two groups with great routes and neither was willing to wait until the following year. After that it all went to poo.

My favourite was the Hovis memorial AR when we had eighty-odd loud bikes starting up outside the pub on Saturday morning and a fair number of people with hangovers sitting on them.

So if we can find enough people to organise an AR I'd be up for it.

I know I was there for that one, but I don't remember it unfortunately and that's not due to how much I had to drink....! (which would have been a fair bit). I just know it was a superb weekend.
