View Full Version : feelin' old...
"Stairway to Heaven" is 50 years old this year. I was never a fan of Zeppelin, they were too "heavy" for me, I preferred the more melodious "Yes" who started the same year as LZ.
Still, it was an impossible song to ignore and forms a musical anchor for me.

Maybe its my age but 1971 was a vintage year for music with so many iconic records made then.

Aging is inevitable but you can always remain young at heart.

I always think it's a shame that Zep are forever associated with 'Stairway.' It's not even the best song on Led Zep IV, to my ears.
Not much of an LZ fan either, agree with Craig - Immigrant Song or Rock and Roll are my favourites.
Got me thinking though, my favourite bands (Joy Division and The Smiths) aren't going to be far off 50 either.... :) Sheesh!!!

'Transmission' was released 42 years ago this year. If you go back another 42 years from 1979, Glen Miller hadn't even formed his Orchestra :D

Glen Miller and his orchestra? ;)
But seriously, as a music-mad 15 year old at the time, the Knebworth gigs were the buzz among my mates. One was lucky enough to be taken by his big brother.
just learned from reddit that Aqualung by Jethro Tull is 50 years old this year too.
I wonder if they'd get away with the lyrics now...

There's rather a lot like that. Try Gary Puckett and the Union Gap, "Young Girl".

another one: "Queen" is also 50 years old this year.
I vividly remember "Bohemian Rhapsody" being released (the first time) - I was in the RAF working in the ILS section at RAF Nth Luffenham, I'd returned from working on the ILS at RAF Akrotiri where I turned 21. We had an old valve radio in our section that would get cranked up each time they played the song. Every time I hear the song it puts me back there.

Mungo Jerry - Summertime has a nice message but very questionable detail. IIRC it's pretty creepy as well as borderline psychopathic "If her Daddy's rich treat her right" ,"If her Daddy's poor use her" (or words to that effect).
