View Full Version : motorcycle airbag jackets
I'm sure they'll be mandatory eventually, here's what Fort9 says:

i've had mine just over a year now (Dainese smart jacket). It certainly has its perks over just wearing a back protector.
I can't see them being made mandatory/a legal requirement either. Only a helmet is currently, otherwise you can ride around like a 'squid', as the Americans put it.

when I started riding helmets weren't compulsory, speed limits were 70mph everywhere (outside towns), no speed cameras, no seat belts, no daytime headlights etc.
I think they will be compulsory eventually to protect us from ourselves. It will be reported as "stopping the carnage on UK roads".

I'm not convinced - the French make CE gloves compulsory, but there's nothing like that here. Wouldn't they start by making armour compulsory before jumping straight to air-bags? (Unless there's an air-bag manufacturer lobbying ...)
The biggest issue is cost - they're not cheap items of equipment (a lot more than a bog standard helmet), and probably cost as much as most people first cheap Moped/125.
