View Full Version : Starting woes Curvy SV

Hi folks.

So my curvy was left sitting outside over the winter (i know I know). When I finally got round to it, it wouldn't turn over. Checked the battery and was completely flat. A few days charging wouldn't bring it around so got a new one. Still won't turn over but the starter relay now clicks again.

What I've ruled out...

Starter switch, clutch (bypassed) and side stand switch as the relay clicks when pressed.
Starter relay as it had battery voltage at input and output when starter pressed
The heavy wire from the relay to the starter motor positive terminal shows battery voltage at the end.
I can turn the engine over if I rock the bike hard enough in gear so it's not locked up.

What I think/observations...

The starter positive terminal is in horrendous shape with rust. If I scrape through it I can still get battery voltage but its practically falling apart...and it can spin pretty freely in its gromet which is also pretty torn up.
The voltage doesn't dip when I thumb the starter so I'm pretty sure the starter isn't binding up...it just doesn't see the battery?
The starter motor case is connected to ground.

Before it was parked up the starter sometimes sounded like it was grinding or rasping as it was winding down after the engine started.

I haven't removed the starter yet as I've nowhere to store the bike with bits of it missing lol but I could spend an afternoon, take it off, run any tests you guys think I need to do, and throw it back on again.

My assumption is water has got into the motor and corroded the brushes or contact points or something. Sound reasonable?

If that's the case I'd rather buy a new starter than try a refurb kit as I've no space to work on it. I'd be happy enough to bolt in a complete assembly.

Is this replacement suitable? I'm confused about how the pointy flywheel is somehow different than the curvy but this listing says it's compatible with both.

Cheers for any insight folks and apologies for the large post. Trying to get as much info down as possible.

Does sound like it's the starter motor, for the price it's not worth trying to rebuild it & it sounds like more than the service parts have seen better days.

No idea about the one on amazon, but you might get a second hand one cheaper & you know it will fit.

Many thanks Spiral. I've a low post count and my thread was in pending so missed this yesterday.

Taking it off today and hooking it up to a battery for a no load test. Like yourself, I expect the thing to be rotten. The gromet is pertty perished so my water theory is showing signs of proof. I'll update later today.

Cheers

You might be lucky and can service the Stater motor for now.

Check out this old post as it has similar info to help,

Well, the starter motor was a mess. Rust, broken brushes, the motor contacts falling apart. Pretty grim. I took a chance and ordered that Amazon starter. Arrived late last night and threw it on after a mission to get the heavy relay cable off without snapping the end.

Success! It turned over right away although a bit cold and weak. I think I'll change the oil and plugs, charge the battery and get going while the weather is good.

Thanks all!

Glad you are getting there. Shame about the Stater motor. People rarely ever service them but I've a couple of 40 year old Honda ones in my garage for another bike that are still in good condition :)

I'm sorry to admit that I'm more of a reactive tinkerer than a preventative tinkerer! I often wonder if I had a shed or something to work in I would be different. It's hard to get the willpower up to work on a bike outside in Irish weather lol. Thanks once again for your post. Those pics were a great help.
