View Full Version : Have I goosed my fork seal?!

Hey all, I did something really stupid in an attempt to rush a job that shouldn't really be rushed ... I had just finished putting the fork seal in and was about to put the seal retaining clip when I noticed I hadn't put in the large washer that sits under the seal!
After a few expletives I had to use the standard method of fork tube removal which meant the upper Bush was bearing directly on the underside of the seal as I slowly hammered it out, I couldn't see any obvious signs of seal damage on inspection so went ahead and refitted it ... correctly this time. The forks are now all together and showing no signs of weeping / leaks at all even when pumped many many times.
Silly question but ... anyone think doing this will ultimately end in disaster? Should I just change the seal in any case before I refit them to the yokes?
Really don't want to strip the fork yet again if I can possibly avoid it.
Any advise / suggestions? Cheers.

You pays your money and takes your choice!
I would go with it - but everyone to their own!

Don't want it to be in the lap of the gods so have just ordered new oem seals, probably an unnecessary expense but at least I'll sleep at night and hopefully won't have to pull the forks again for a while.

Well ... I decided to rebuild the suspect fork and upon inspection of the fork seal it looked like th top Bush had indeed cut into the lower edge, so ... glad I decided to strip it again for sure.
Lesson learned ... take my time and more care.
