It looks great but, even with a valve lifter, I doubt whether my 63kg is going to move that piston quick enough to start it, fast enough for an ankle breaking kickback maybe.

Having had a few Brit kickstart singles and twins over the preceding 50 years, I can tell you that, as long as the bike is in good running order, it's knack rather than weight or strength that will start them.

They still look amazing, so purposeful.

One of my uncles had a 441 Shooting Star in that lovely metallic bronze that BSA used in the early 70s, the 9-year-old me thought it was fantastic. The BARK when he started it was fabulous.

They were great lookers and good handlers but the truth is they were fragile and unreliable. Honda et al made bikes that looked a bit boxy and handled poorly but they were powerful and they didnt break. Guess who won that battle?
