Last week I booked a hotel in Kyle of Lochalsh for 3 nights so I could finally cross Skye off my bucket list

The weather forecast was very undecided leading up to it, but I got very lucky. Both of the 2 full days I had on the island were dry and bright enough, with the cloud adding some drama to the beautiful landscapes.

It is a photograher's dream. I could spend weeks exploring the place. I managed to cover most of the major roads and areas that I wanted to visit.

At one point I was averaging 10mph because I was stopping to admire the views so much! It is a beautiful place

Wow! Fabulous pictures and stunning scenery Darren.

I haven't been to Skye since 1972, could be time for a re-visit I think.

I have cycle camped most of the roads of Skye, and visited its lofty heights. Brings back great memories.
Will have to return but some of the images of the traffic in the height of summer, over the last few years no thanks.
Thank you for sharing really enjoyed them.

Brilliant. We've been thinking of Skye this week for a holiday. It missed out, but is definitely up for a big day out from where we decided on.

Great photos Darren.

Great photos Darren.

We decided to tack on two nights on Skye to our Scottish holiday this year, so hopefully we will see some of these places. Any tips Darren? :D

When are you going up there Mike, we're heading to stay with my sister in June or July, I can't remember at the momentWe will be on Skye the nights of 18th and 19th June. We should have most of the 18th and all day on 19th to see Skye. Heading off on 20th towards home, taking the ferry to Mallaig on return trip.

Brilliant! :smt038

If you've got two days you can pretty much see the whole island like I did. Especially if you're staying somewhere central.

I really liked the southern part around the bigger mountains. Non stop views wherever you go.

This part in particular:
https://www.google.com/maps/@57.1322171,-5.9715009,3a,82.3y,324.69h,90.98t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sGygzjIQWisZhINTW7bhEVA!2e0!7i1 6384!8i8192

The north east road is beautiful with the steep mountains and cliffs.

The north west road is definitely missable if you're tight on time. Not particularly scenic compared to the rest. More open and farmland.

Neist Point Lighthouse is amazing. Walking shoes would be useful here! Very muddy to get on the cliff viewpoints. I did mange with my bike boots though :)

Unless you are prepared for a LONG walk I'd give the fairy pools a miss. Loads of tourists. I went as close as I could by road, but there was no way I was walking it in full leathers. And even on the bike it's tricky to make progress past the traffic.

This was my day 1 and 2 to give you an idea of times. I stopped a lot to admire the views and take pictures though! :p

Beyond that, I'd say avoid the busy holiday times and get some midgie spray! Enjoy

Brings back some great memories, we cycle camped it 40 years ago. Train up to Fort William then biked. The A road from Portree to Staffin - Uig had grass growing along its centre! Not easy with m/bike gear but the walk up to the Old Man of Storr was really interesting (well I thought so) with all the wind eroded rocks. We went in May before the Midges got really active. Probably need to go in April now.
Would love to revisit but looking at the queues of traffic before Covid struck not for me. I try and find quieter places, plus the wife cannot walk so well now as arthritis has taken its toll.
Enjoy its wonderful.

Darren thank you. We'll be in the car with dogs, so walking shoes available. Thanks for the tip on the Fairy Pools, I'd heard it was busy. The older dog can't manage long walks, so maybe give it a miss.

The hotel is a little north of Uig, anything more central was booked up.

Yeah definitely a no-go if you're taking the car. You'd lose half a day there easy

If you spin around in that link I posted of the lighthouse. It makes me want to go back there at sunrise/sunset! Looks like it would be amazing

Hi Darren

Just wanted to pop on here and say thanks for the pics and help sorting out where to go. We had a great time and would highly recommend the north of the island to anyone, although the drive to Armadale from Uig was pretty stunning too.

Cheers!

Sorry Darren, missed that. The weather was OK, but not brilliant. Our main day was Sunday 19th which started off damp and windy but improved throughout the day. The evening was stunning!
