Having watched the first bit of that, my response would be that we should just stop buying so much unnecessary sh1te.

...but capitalism relies on consumerism, are you some kind of anarchist? :)

You're right, of course, but it would need a new system and all the other ones have been tried and failed plus corporations see no reason to change (ask Bezos who makes $142,667 per minute if you include all his net worth).

I'd agree in part although...

It's been the biggest waste of time and difficulty for us at work for the last year and a half. Tyring to source, pre-order and keep track of parts so we can repair bicycles. Bicycles that are needed by most of our customers as transport and to get to work in the city. Not unnecessary crap unfortunately. We're seeing predicted delivery dates of lots of parts (that are integral to being able to do our work and provide timely service for customers) with predicted delivery dates of summer 2022. Just not realistic and the knock on effect is we've taken a lot of frustrated abuse from customers because of it.

+1 to that!

Maybe if they stopped shipping so much of the pointless crap about, there would be room for the rather more useful stuff to get through, such as the bits to repair the bicycles folks are using to commute.

I realise that views like this position me to the left of Genghis Khan. I'm obviously a raging commie and an anarchist then.

It points to the reliance on other countries/regions being unsustainable on a long term basis.
These things need to start being created more locally/within regions where it is closer to the consumer. I believe most people would pay more for goods/food made locally/closer to home.
I try to avoid buying items from overseas (Asia/USA), if the information is available at time of sale.

Shimano wheel hub = £20
UK Made Hope hub = £120 +

Most people that come to our shop want to pay less than they do already. There's no way they'd pay UK manufactured prices.

The more you have made locally, the lower the price gets. Low volume output stuff will always be more expensive as you have less inventory to spread the costs over.

British Brompton bicycles are in demand the world over. They have a cult following in some countries and they can't keep up with demand. They still cost about 3 times what most people want to spend on a bicycle. They've also nearly gone bankrupt a couple of times and pay their welders a fairly poor wage with fairly uninspiring working conditions.

If someone can start a UK company and step up production to fill the demand for Shimano components alone in the UK then best of luck to them and please do it asap.

If someone was successful and established enough to meet that demand I'd imagine they'd want to sell worldwide too... as companies in other countries do... then we're back to having global trade...
