According to Clare Foges (the columnist) Some Brits relish the thought of the cameraderie when we collectively suffer hardships. (I am not one, the winter of 78-79 was miserable).

I think they should take down the inspirational poster from their walls, the one that says:

Indeed, and replace it with 'patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel.' And by that, I'm inferring Samuel Johnson's meaning of patriotism: the kind of blind flag-shagging that has become increasingly common over the past decade.
