Proposal to stop bike modifications

...actually all road vehicles not just bikes. This is a proposal only but it's worth keeping an eye on.
I've already written to my MP (for what it's worth) explaining about fender extenders, huggers, adjustable levers, flyscreens and handguards that my bike has had fitted which has made my bike safer.

Another article I saw about this said that only mods made by the bike manufacturer would be allowed.

I stress this is a proposal only.

This has been going around for years.

It may end up like NZ where you have to declare mods, and there's particular legal requirements e.g cars can't be lower than 'X height'

i think Germany and Switzerland has been that way for years. its no bad thing really due to the amount of bodge jobs i have seen on folks bikes.

It might stop the obnoxious rats around here from getting their ECU's altered so their DSG gearchanges make stupid rasping noises every shift with overly loud crackles and bangs on the overrun that they revel in every night as they race around town. So many local garages are advertising re-maps at stupidly cheap prices. Trouble is, as we all know, legislation is one thing but enforcing it is quite a different matter...

It depends on the modifications. As others have said, things like fender extenders, huggers, flyscreens , handguards should be allowed , as well as other things like frame/engine protectors, mirror extensions, luggage racks, road legal exhausts, cosmetic things etc. It needs some common sense applying.

This is where MAG does a good job fighting for riders' interests on things like this.

I've been reading a little about this on another forum (car forum)
The general consensus is that the laws, if they ever get through, won't be retrospective and will apply to new vehicles from date of legislation.

It is also aimed at people messing with emission control systems, and safety equipment so I think aesthetics and handling improvements, rider aids and the like would probably not be affected.

It is also to do with automated devises on vehicles, for example it would outlaw someone being able to change the ecu or engine mapping and perimeters where a self driving car would have factory settings, which is no bad thing imo.
