A name you may not be familiar with unless you read SciFi. One of my favourite authors, here's 3 I've enjoyed.

Eon - an asteroid enters Earth orbit, it's divided into 7 (empty) chambers a couple have (human) cities, the 7th goes on forever.

Darwin's Radio - an idea that evolution occurs when an animal species is under pressure, when that happens the change manifests itself across the entire species rapidly. In this story the next human iteration develops chromatophoric ability but it looks like a plague and the race is on between those who wish to cure it and those that understand what's occurring. It enables very fast communication between people using facial colouring displays (along with speech) - no miscommunications or misunderstandings which reduces conflict.

War Dogs - humans are told they need to fight an alien species for their own survival. The aliens were told the same - turns out it's for the entertainment of another group of species.
