Last night I watched one of my favourite films again: Pi, the 1998 debut by Darren Aronofsky, about a mathematician who stumbles upon a numerical pattern that may enable the stock market to be predicted ... and may also unlock the secrets of the Hebrew Torah and bring about the messianic age.

It's a really concise, tightly-plotted psychological thriller, with great acting and direction. Unfortunately, it isn't on any streaming services at the moment, so it's DVD only.

What obscure films do you recommend?

Just re-watched one of the great ghost stories, "Oh, whistle and I'll come to you my lad". A 1968 black and white production of the classic M.R. James story, and starring Michael Hordern. A masterclass in ghost stories.

"'Oh, Whistle, and I'll Come to You, My Lad' is a ghost story by British writer M. R. James, included in his collection Ghost Stories of an Antiquary (1904). The story is named after a 1793 poem of the same name penned by Robert Burns." Wikipedia.

Ooooh, where can I find that, please? That is a brilliant story and film.

The story always reminds me of The Monkey's Paw in the sense of mounting foreboding and dread.
