View Full Version : Anyone NOT dropped their bike??
You can stop reading now Suki   (SORRY,you dont drop it everyday....do you?!!)
Talking to other SV owners and comparing scars, has anyone honestly never dropped their pride & joy? (Crashes not included....theyre not funny, just painful)
Prizes for the funniest/most embarrasing answers. Worst one for me was when it flipped off the stand. Grabbed the right bar but was resigned to the fact it was going down,so tried to soften the blow as much as possible. Still came away with a nice little dent on the left hand side of the tank
Needless to say my mate was laughing his ass off,*******! Saw the funny side, eventually
Hey,
First off, be nice to Suki! She's my buddy! She knows my problems... Yes. Unfortuneatly I have laid my bike down. Literally. First day I bought it. First day I sat on one. Was on a non-busy road. Just going up and down, back and forth. Getting the hang of things. Of course, this road had gravel patches! I was coming to a stop on the right hand side (Canadian). Put my right foot down. Looked to my left to find the kickstand, leaned the bike to the right. Felt the pressure on my leg tried my hardest to hold the damn thing up. My foot slipped on some rocks, and I slowly, slowly set her down. I was ****ed off! I look back now and laugh. But feel somewhat embarrased when people point out scratches. "Ah... must have been during shipping. I don't care though, I love it!" Cause I did get a 1 mm scratch on my tank duing shipping. Which Suzuki is sending me a brand new tank for! :) I have scratches on my right mirror, right foot peg, right indicator, and bar end. Also a small dent in my canister, which makes me the most angry. But, looking back on things now, I give myself a chuckle. And that was on August 1st, 2003. Whihc reminds me, any suggestions to get that dint out? Thanks,
Mitch

I know this may sound odd, but I've successfully dropped mine!
Allow me to explain.
In order to avoid an imminent crash and reduce the damage to the bike I’ve laid the bike down.
I got away with top fairing damage and some paint work down the side, but no fork/frame or engine damage.
Only the once mind in the 27,800 odd miles travelled this year.

never dropped the SV, but I think I win the prize for accidents involving wildlife:
1) a pigeon flew into my head at 50mph (ouch!)
2) hit a cow in India while riding an Enfield with no brakes (fortunately it didn't die as I think it's life imprisonment or something!!)
3) stopped 20 ft short of hitting a wild elephant (those Enfields really don't have any brakes at all!)
Never droped the SV or GSX-R, but did drop my CBR400RR, had only had it a cople of days, pulled up outside my mates (made plenty of noise to make sure i was seen) flicked the sidestand down with my right leg as i leand the bike over, lifted my left leg over the seat to get off only to find that the sidestand hadn't gone down properly and the bike toppled over pinning me by my right leg, lukilly a passing motorist helped me lift it of my leg while my mates stood around ****ing themselves with laughter.
Still i can see the funny side now.

Rizla, This is my worst nightmare! Did make me chuckle though.

I hate the bloody things, I can't believe you did not fall off with the complete surprise of being hit by a flying rat!
I had a pheasant fly into a headlight of a car I was driving and it managed to blow up the whole light. Scared the crap outta me with the bang that it made.

twice now, once on my mother in laws driveway when i stalled it on a their incline side on and my right foot had about two feet lower than level to go before it hit the deck. Another time i was doing a u turn on a hill and dropped it onto my right leg, a car actually drove around me, the b*****d. Its a good job its not a MV cos it would of cost a fortune by now :)

Fell over doing a U-turn the other month. Just a couple of dinky scuffs to the lowers.
Re: birdstrike. British Aerospace have a test facility in Hull to check aircraft canopies. They catapult chickens into the windscreens of aeroplanes (a10kg goose at 600mph is NO laughing matter!!!). Funny bit? An american train company built the catapult after having seen it and were tryign it out on their new train. They got a bit worried when the first bird went through the window, the drivers seat and buried itself in the wall of the next carriage!!! They called BAE at Hull. the response:
"Defrost the chicken!"

er - I did!! blimin' creatures...
what it even stranger though is what happened afterwards - somewhat dazed i was ushered into a nearby house for a coffee and sit down, but when i looked around the room i realised that i had been abandoned in a room full of mental patients. the last straw was when one of them came right up to my face and told me that I had crashed because I was wearing the wrong shaped glasses - agghhh!!!

Dropped the bike on the tight right-hander
too much speed, too much front brake, too much camber on the poor road surface, and too much weigth as I had just filled it with gas. Complete rider error!
Rode it home with broked collar bone, no rear brake, and handing front right indicator.. (still working,.. just hanging by the cables) - also snapped the brake hanger, cracked upper right fairing.. and damaged my lowers. - Can's a little dinged as well..
Felt much more stupid for the second drop tho.
Just finished repairing the working parts of my bike and tried to ride it off the patio/repair bay with the front disk lock on. Slowly dropped it onto the left hand side
Just snapped the gear selector.. but got it ally welded within the week.
Off course as it was only 2 weeks after my previous accident I re-snapped my collar bone keeping the bike off the deck and lifting it back on 2 wheels.
Had 6 weeks off work tho

Thought i'd just share this one with you all.
Wheeling the bike out of the garage last night for a nice evenings ride.
As i got level with my 3 day old golf gti turbo i lost my ballance and dropped the bloody bike onto the front wing of the car.
On pulling the bike up found a now very crumpled front wing but no damage to the bike! PHEW
Ah well down to the body shop for a new front wing. My wife couldn't believe i wasn't that bothered about the car. !! She has no idea what it means to have a bike. I'll have to show her. now wheres that whip !!!

I dropped my 2 week old bike in the Whitgift car park
Not much damage and at least it looks used now lol.
I think Benji saw the remains of my indicator on the floor as he was there about half hour after i left.
Oh well - it had to happen one day and at least i have got it over and done with

Chabs, Yeah but at least you did it with nobody watching. Although I bet the guys in the CCTV control room were falling (!) about laughing. It amazes me the Whitgift car park though, the motorbike bay has a surface so covered in oil and gunk I have seen better skid pans to park on.
Not surprised its free for bikes, even the Council wouldnt charge for it.
Now my fee for picking it up for you........ 8)

Been there, bought the t-shirt. Funnily enough it was the day after i fitted crash bungs. Stopped to get some cash. Didnt put the stand down properly. Too close to a high kirb. Walked away only to hear a crunch! Luckily the crash bung had hit level with the high kirb so there was no damage at all! :D
Also dropped her twice in the snow, both times within 50 yards of each other! Those ones did cause some damage!

Never dropped my bike in over 3 years and not likely to now - car pulled out on me and knocked me off, wrecking the bike. So I've effectively still got a clean sheet if accidents don't count. Just hope I can keep it with my next bike, though I would swap my crash for someone elses drop anyday.
Ian
just washed it, wheeling it backwards off the drive and didn't put my foot on the kerb properly! :? the weight all went onto my ankle (twisted) and the bike went down. no damage 'at all' :D R&G Racing - "i love you"...
How about this: I fell off it the other day without even being on it! Huh? Well it was on the side-stand and I reached forward to put my left hand on the bar and then cocked my leg to sling it over and on the bike but I had misjudged things. My left hand missed the bar completely and I fell forward slithered down ungainly against the side of the bike and my car that was parked beside it. Not easy to do!

How come, all these folks who drop their bike, ever so gently, end up with broken indicators? I slammed (well, about 25mph) mine into the side of a BMW at an angle of about 70deg, smashed the plasitcs, snapped the forks and generally slid it down the road, hard. BUT the indicators were all still in one piece and working (tho slightly scuffed). They have some peculiar design characteristics :?
Ian
You werent trying hard enough Ian
The poll is almost neck & neck. Either we have a lot of careful owners,or youre all just big liars! :P
I think we have a winner in Jonboy! http://www.bgh.org.uk/mayfair/images/a_smile_not_worthy.gif I was laughin my ass off just reading it,would prob die if I actually saw you in action! No-one taped it by any chance? You could get good money for that on Youve been Framed
I have to admit that it would have been utterly hilarious for any bystanders. And no the bike didn't fall over, no one even saw it (oh, what a shame!) and how the hell I did it I don't know but I'm happy to give a slow-mo demonstration to Magoo the next time I see him at Soho (although only if he promises not to do a burn-out directly in front of the open door of the Indian restaurant again and fill the interior with Bridgestone eau de cologne, as I swear the owner will come out with a large kitchen knife this time and the yet to be born Magoo junior needs a dad!).
lol Chablis, I don't think I saw anything but I know what you and Marrus mean about that space, not very nice at all, surprising really, didn't think bikes could do that much damage?
Still I shouldn't worry about it, I keep almost bouncing off those big green post things trying to get through the gaps
As for dropping it, paniked, grab a load of front and hit the deck, not sure what it is about the indicators though, I destroyed the right hand fairing, bar end weight, brake leaver and the indicator was fine! Not even the slightest break!

Dropped the SV for the first time the other day. Knocked it off the block of wood under the sump, while refitting the front wheel. Luckily it landed on my son who saved her from injury! (Sorry Jona!)
Funniest was in France while touring on my old VFR with full hard luggage. Stopped for fuel at the usual scratty French filling station, floor covered in diesel. I remember thinking ' I'll whatch out for diesel on me tyres when I leave...' Then I went to put it on the center stand and gave a right old heave as it was so loaded, but my diesel soaked boot sole slipped off the stand and I CHUCKED my bike onto it's side! Once the locals stopped laughing they helped me pick her up, no damage except a lightly scuffed pannier - boy was I pleased.

I have never dropped my SV, but the wife dropped it on the RH side pulling out of our drive when taking it for a test drive to see if see liked it, she did like it and we got one for her, that she dropped the other day on the LH side, luckily she has a habit of throwing herself under the bike reducing the damage to bike. Mine only has slight scuff on mirror and bar end, Caz's has small scratch on lower faring, mirror and bar end.

Blimey! Don't pay £80, Chablis. £30 is about right for the indicator though and they are dead easy to fit. I should know, seeing as I dropped my sv right outside riossi while picking it up from its first service.
Not recently either, touch wood!
The last time was quite a few years back when I was riding my first CBR400RR to work one morning. I was a little overexuberant when chucking it into a corner at an intersection. Que dumbarse on cold tires, on a cool day, hindsight is a wonderful thing thoughts. I lost the front, and was on the pavement faster than you could say.... The bike pirouetted up the road ending up in the gutter, with little damage.
The pedestrian walking past at the time almost had his chin hit the ground as he watched. So I got up from where I was sitting in the middle of the intersection, ran up to the bike and pushed it the block to work as it wouldn't start because it was flooded. I managed to get it started later in the day, and ride it home. Embarrasing, yes, costly, fortunately not.
It reminded me of one of my favourite phrases, "to be old and wise, you must first be young and stupid". I am still going thru the young and stupid phase :)
Cheers, Glen.

Here's my story. The day I bought my 2002 SV650S I dropped it. Doh! Right after shaking hands with the dealer I started it up and set the choke. I was to excited to wait for the bike to warm up so I just took off. I stopped next door at an abandoned restarant and didn't realize I was putting my foot in a massive pothole ! As my foot touched the ground in the pothole, I couldn't push back up straight. I sat there for 2 minutes until my leg was ready to give out and came to the conclusion that I would have to lay the bike down. I did as gently as I could and picked it back up. When I looked it over I had scratches and a few little dents on my Yoshimura exhaust and a few minor scratches on my aftermarket right lower fairing. Not to bad but enough to break my heart.

Doh!
I did twice in a week
Collected pride and joy in my truck as I was working late and shop closing, Got home jumped on bike and went for a blast, pulled up outside pub near work, put my foot down and oops! I had my work boots on with the laces wrapped round foot peg.
I woz embarassed tp say one word.
I took it the the dealer and got a new tank and fairing for £50 off a write off and dropped it on the way home. 2nd time round no damage, only me leg hurted
Haven't dropped my sv yet (touch wood)
Dropped my gpz500 and my er5 learner bike, didn't manage to drop my bn125 tho
Not dropped the SV, but did drop the ER5 I learned on, practising emergency stops in the wet I squeezed a bit too hard and locked the wheel, bike went south, broke indicator, no damage to me. I felt such a dork.
No Comment......Don't want to tempt fate :?

Push my bike over through over exuberant cleaning  Smashed off side front 'cater
Then two weeks later the missus dropped it in Morrisons car park (of all places) You guessed it, off side front 'cater again
:-k Really must get some crash bungs - as soon as R&G pull their fingers out & get 'em made for a K3 with lowers (which are going to be fitted when I have it serviced) - Mind you... If I drop it with lowers on, it really will cause damage
Dropped mine the other day on some gravel. All my own stupid fault. Was going round a corner, saw gravel then grabbed a handfull of front brake. Had to push my bike for half a mile as the foot rest hanger and gear lever broke off. Also need to respray the lower fairing on that side. Never mind, I'm sure that it could have been worse.

Got a good one, maybe a bit embarassing.
About two months after purchasing a fine blue K2 SV, lower fairing and all I decided to take a run down to sunny Newcastle (N.Ireland). Good ride down, although a chilly wind and dodgey shoulder was making the ride a tad uncomfortable by the time I got there. Got to the car park, loadsa bikes lined up, people eyeing up the SV, I found a free space and went to turn in full steering lock, when suddenly my shoulder gave way and the bike had somehow (in the space of two seconds) ended up lying on the ground. ANYWAY there was a rush of blokes to the rescue with me standing there red faced and confusssed.
I still get incredibly nervous when I roll up and people are watching me park!

Had the odd near miss when my leg has just managed to save the bike from toppling but kept it upright so far.
When I first started riding I did drop the Varedero however, to my sister's eternal delight. As I tried to bump up the kerb by her garden the bike went overto the right pulling me with it, To her credit she tried to keep a straight face but she couldnt even stand up straight :laughat: . I was bloody mortified and Debi's rolling around saying " oh I'm sorry Jay HA HA HA are you ok? HA HA HA".  :****ed:
Needless to to say I buggered off pretty sharpish with my tail between my legs.   It was a while before I could see the funny side.

Always best to do it with no-one around me thinks.... Much less embarassing
Had the SV for 6 months and not dropped.
I dropped the 125 on day 1 of my das.
I dropped the er5 3 times on my das (3rd was just before my test so had to borrow my co-student's).
I've dropped my sv 3 times, last time on monday just gone... although one time i hadn't checked my kickstand was down properly and the vibrations of the running engine dislodged it so it fell on my car...
I dropped a mate's bike when he let me have a go on it in a pub carpark... (years ago)
I dropped my other half's fazer practising slow control in a carpark...
There is in fact only one bike I've ever ridden and not dropped (co-student's).
Glad I've got crash bungs on my sv (however chewed they look atm)... :D
I gently put down (as i like to describe it) the GS500 i was on during my DAS. Didn't feel too bad though as my instructor got her boot caught on her footpeg and dropped her bike. She was behind me in the car park, but I heard it described by a series of expletives through the intercom, followed by a request for the bike to be lifted off her boot

I was on the ground before I even knew what happened, rolling around on my back, on my rucksack, like a huge turtle
It's then you realise how heavy bikes are. Broke the front brake lever off :( too.

ha! Thats nothing. My instructor CRASHED into the back of my bike on the DAS and then decided to have a go at me for not turning out of the junction ( I stopped at the stop line turning onto a dual carrage way).
Needless to say ive got another DAS booked with a different instructor, 2 weeks time 1-2-1 tutition for 2 FULL days with the test on the 3rd day. Unlike the other place which charged me a whole day for the test day </rant>

10 years ago I dropped my old GPZ1000RX while doing a slow speed u-turn, it wasn't easy picking up 225kg of bike but I managed it and there wasn't any damage. I've had the SV sine November 2003 and not dropped it so far, it feels so light compared with my GPZ though.

Laid it down in the alley behind my house. After 12 hour night shift and a fill up at the petrol station I lost my balance walking it down to my gate. It leaned over to the right and stopped against a neighbours wall. I managed to hold it there for a bit and thought it would be okay but I just coulndn't get it up again (ahem  ) Then as I was trying to move around to get a better angle she scraped down the wall and just lay there on the floor (oh god  ). Trouble was there was a wall right where I needed to stand to be able to pick her up again. Managed to do it after a while but pulled my back and shoulders in the process. Scuffed the mirror a bit and bent the front frame a little but I bent it back with a bit of with a bit of brute force, also bent brake pedal but gonna get me a Woodcraft replacement sometime soon :)
Dropped my Sachs a few times too but who gives a s**t

Never dropped mine and rode through 8 winters now....touch wood.
But my brothers friend recently passed his test and decided on a GSXR600 for his first bike....got some nice new sports boots too to finish the look....only thing is I think they must have been a little on the stiff side as he couldn't get his foot out from under the gear lever when he came to a stop. Over went the bike !! Luckily he'd had crash bobbins fitted so there was minimal damage.
I didn't laugh...honest.

Funnest one of mine was about a month ago...
Some dappy cow in a cage decided to park across my drive so I couldn't get in. She didn't notice me reving the bike so I got off to give her a bit of 'friendly' advice. Unfortunaly I forgot to put the stand down, bike rolled forward and rested on her bonet. As I picked the bike off of her car she said sorry and offered to move. No damage to my bike but she had a dented and scrached bonet she didn't even notice, serves her right
Oh and I've forgotten how many times I've saved it while testing if disc locks really work

I dropped my GSXR twice. Once off a paddock stand in the garage, no-one saw but it took me 20 minutes to get it up (no rude comments please) as it fell against a wall and I couldn't get a decent hold.
The second time, just last month, I was at Brands. Just came in to the pits after a great session, whipping some serious litre asses, when I got off my bike and just let the bike fall to the floor - completely forgot about the side stand. Luckily my pit was in front of all the advanced lot lining up to go out, and in full view of everyone coming in the pits so maybe just under 100 bikers plus instructors. Someone kindly said my stand must have given way  I agreed  Just glad I got a hand picking it up this time :D
