Apologies if this has been covered before..

I aim to make improvements to the over sized under tray on the new 03 SV.
This will result in hacking into the under tray and replacing the current number plate for a smaller illegal one (to keep a cool look).

I don't want to install an illegal plate if I'm going to brick it each time I pass a police car as there likely to pull me over and give me a lecture or fine me. But I see so many bikes around which have such a plate, so surely the plod must turn a blind eye in most cases ?.

What is the maximum fine or points would you receive ..?
Your views on this subject will be most welcomed ..!

Thanks..
:D

I know what you mean about the back end of the K3 - but I would never contemplate putting an illegal plate on a bike, purely because bikers are easy prey for 'Plod' as it is without giving them an excuse to stop you!

Besides, I have seen some lovely mods on rear ends of the svs on this site, without having to resort to an 'illegal' number plate!

It is possible to put a much smaller plate on a bike than the standard main-sale most dealers fit and still be legal.

The plate must have at least 11mm border (margin), letters legal size and correct spacing - check out http://www.dvla.gov.uk/vehicles/regmarks/reg_marks_current_requirements.htm#motorcycles

I went from a 9x7 number plate to 7x5.5 which is still legal and looks much neater between the hi-level cans.....

Been stopped and fined. Plate was a 9x3 so not really that small. Hell, it was big enought to be caught on camera :(

Still, when i got fined (£30) i was told that if i didnt change it and got caught again, then i could loose the registration mark and issued with a Q-plate, which i have found to be true. As my reg is personalised, and cost the now ex, £500, i will stick with a legal plate for now. Not to bad, as my plate can be leagly made smaller, as i have 2 ones in it, so it works out as a 7x5, and still remains legal.....just wish i could have the correct spacing for what the plate is meant to say.....oh well ce la vie!

Still think its a daft law...baut aren't most of them?

Vinyl, your plate at 9x3 is not too small - it is the wrong shape. All bike plates have to be of 2 lines (some 3 line ones allowed on older machines). So a 'car type' single line is actually an illegal plate, no matter what the size. This makes most personal plates no good.

Anyone?

No 9x3 is to small and yep, i know(now) that a bike plate has to be a square.

No the thing is, when i was fined for the plate, they didnt even mention that the plate had to be square, so do the coppers that are booking us, even know the law?

Now, i actually spoke to the young lady that booked me, apparently she had only been in the job 3 weeks!!!

Just goes to show, that all though we have a pop at the coppers that are actually carrying out the booking, i personaly blame the chief inspector etc, as they are the ones that dish out the orders.

What can you do??

Can't actually see the point in installing a small number plate plus I park my bike under Scotland Yard London every day that's why I have a road legal Quill as well.

Well I don't know about you all, but I'm just glad the plod are out catching those irresponsible bikers who bug the hell out of me what with their small number plates and all, rather than sorting out the gangrenous scabs who let off fireworks every night from September to March each and every year.
I mean, the fireworks are just delightful, whereas those damn small plates..................

i tryed a small plate on my bike but wat with all the backfiring and lack of baffeling in my cans it lasted a week before i bricked and took it off.

besides the mounting bracket hanging out both sides if the plate looked a bit sad and i couldnt afford to do it properly

I've been pulled by the plod to many times i don't need to give them another reason to do it which is why i've still got the standard exhaust aswell

I ran a GSXR400 and an SV in the Devon/Dorset area and had a plate at 7 by 5 inches, I guess I got lucky or the cops I encountered weren't *****s coz I never got stopped for it.
I'm in SoCal now and the legal plate is the same size (or damn close to it!) as my old illegal so that's cool. The authorities have prison inmates stamp the number plates out of aluminium! (aluminum as they'd say here!) 8)
I'm sure I've jinxed myself now and if and when I come back home and put an illegal plate on I'll get nicked first time out! :?
