View Full Version : Can anyone recommend leathers for a tall skinny person?

I'm after a set of zip-together leathers but am having trouble finding trousers that fit. I'm 6'1" with a 32" waist.

I've only tried on Frank Thomas and Hein Gericke stuff so far, but they didn't fit well enough to buy.

I'd consider a one-piece, but a good fit seems even more unlikely.

Can anyone with a similar build recommend anything? Do any makes offer a Long/Medium/Short leg variation? Any advice that can save me hours of trying on would be much appreciated.

Cheers,

Rob

I'm 6' and as skinny as a few pipe cleaners twisted together! I used to weigh 8 1/2 stone (until a few eeeks ago when I put on a load of weight) with a 32" waist and 34" inside leg and I found, after trying on loads of different suits at the Alexandra Palace Show earlier this year, that the Swift Viper race suit was the best fit at the money I was looking to spend (up to £500) for a one-piece suit.
It normally retails at just over £500 but they were doing it there for £400 (before it was even released! ). I have since seen it at Brands Hatch World Superbikes earlier this year for £320, so look around!
It fit me better than most others there at the time & I have since filled it out a bit more! :D
I have fallen off in it once on a trackday and there was, in fairness, hardly a scratch on it! It was only a slow lowside but any marks are now hardly visible after a bit of boot polish & Renapur!
I have noticed a couple of places where the stitching is now starting to come undone a little. This is, however, in areas of high stress like the upper knee and the bottom of the front zip where it mets the tank and of no major significance as it's in places where they are double or triple layered any way... I have also done about 8000 miles in them and fallen off once, so I don't see this as being too bad.

They do a 2-piece version as well & I can't imagine it's much different fit-wise!

And before anyone says it... Yes, Jamie Whitham (my personal racing hero) used to wear Swift race leathers so they have been well crash-tested!

Of course the other option is to get a set of made-to-measure leathers made for you.

I would have done this if I had that little bit of extra spending power!!

p.s: My Frank Thomas gloves were S*!& when I fell off! The lining burst in both and the leather of the glove & the straps was worn down a LOT on the other... This was on a silky-smooth race-track at 30 mph-ish! My £160 FT winter jacket has also eaten itself due to bad design! Suffice to say, I'll take one hell of a lot of persuasion to buy any FT product again!

I`m 6`4 and use wolf leathers. I don`t find length a problem normally, cos gloves have long cuffs and bike boots are so tall. I find the body length a problem, from neck to groin!

The ones I have are tight, but I`ve had two BIG crashes in them and they`ve stood up quite well. And they grip most makes of sliders.

Ok, that's Wolf and Swift Viper to try.

Thanks very much for the advice.

A guy at work has Alpinestars 2-piece leathers and he's tall and skinny. he said they fit straight off the peg and are really comfy. HTH

I'm 6 foot and 32 inch waist... I've got a Hein Gericke two piece suit that fits fine. Jacket is fine trousers are slightly bulky around the knees but I'm going to get these altered, they are fine as is mind you!

They say Dainese is one of the best. Mine has served me well even during the crash at 100-140 km/h (highsider ->asphalt->gravel).

I'm 190 cm (6'4" ?), but took size 52, sleeves and trousers are a bit short, but gloves and shoes can cover that. Otherwise seems to be a part of myself.

Check http://www.mlol.de/ANGEBOTE/fundgrube/fundgrube.html - prices are not bad at all, ordered helmet and gloves from there, delivery took some time...

Crowtree (http://www.crowtreeleathers.co.uk/) do made to measure for not too unreasonable prices. Might be worth a look...

Thanks to everyone for their advice. Here's an update:

I had a trying-on session and bought a Frank Thomas two piece. When I got home I tried them on again and instantly found the trousers were digging in painfully at the back of the knees in the bike-riding position. How is it that you can try something on in a shop, walk around in them, sit on bikes in them and feel happy that they fit perfectly... but as soon as you get home they suddenly don't fit and feel awful?

So, I took them back to the shop, had another mammoth trying-on session, and ended up with a Dainese set this time. Pretty much twice the price of the Frank Thomas stuff, but they fit.

Next time I think I'll very tempted to go down the Crowtree made-to-measure route. Thanks for the link, Rich, the prices are surprisingly reasonable.
