Gunnsons Colourtune

Has anyone ever used one of these? (for information, they're little doohickeys that you use to replace one of your plugs, which allow you to see into the combustion chamber of your bike and tell if it's runnig rich or lean)

With my lean towards DIY bodgery, it seems like it might be a good alternative to 10 million dyno runs...

No, the Colourtune can't stand any pressure so you won't be able to do a full throttle under load test, which is one of the main areas for which the jetting needs to be set, and that's besides not being able to see it whilst riding your bike to get it under full load.

You definately can't use it under load, for obvious reasons, so fine tuning's not going to be posible, but I was thinking that it could be suitable for getting a good basic setup, and therefore reducing dyno time... No?

How are you going to see it when your bike`s running anyway ????????

I think it's only really useful for checking the idle mixture burn and nothing else.

Barty Boy, I'd stick it on the front plug and heft the radiator out of the way, most likely.

Thing is, they've been around for ages and they're used widely for setup work on cars and bikes, so I'd assume they're not all that useless, right? But on the other hand, there's no point setting your bike up so that it runs lovely at 9000 revs in neutral... I might pick one up just for playing with- it'll tell me broadly whether I'm in the right ballpark- but I think you're probably right that it's not all that useful. Oh well.

yeah is that after you made a 90 degree mirror that can see through black rubber ht leads down a 4" hole ;)

not really seen these colourtune kits of late
(looked at them 15 years ago and thought what a crock of sh$t )
basically all they do is tell you what the bike is running like at tick over nothing more

taking your plug out and looking at the colour of the electrode after a 50 mile thrash will tell you more .But what do i know ????

save your money and put it to a dyno run its more reliable ;)

also the only thing you need from the gunsons range if you daft enough is a strobe light and this is only for the very off chance that you will infact use it ----------------------------------------------ONE DAY

but even then there are better for less ;)

Hum, read a Raptor rider comment that it was perfectly visible on his, and it's the same lump... Ah well.

We used them at a wee bike maint course in Clydebank College. Bloke reckons he's used them to help tune race engines...No reason to doubt him, and he does seem to know his stuff.
