Not sure if this is the place to ask this. I recently replaced my beloved Arai helmet with an AGV Rossi replica as the deal was very good. Think i may be regretting it as i dont think its as good as the Japanese make. Therefore thought i would run a poll as to what helmets you guys currently use.........................keep it clean though! :?

i'll pretty much only wear arashi. lightest helmet on the market(well apart from that stupid bmw thing) anti fog visor as standard and it fits my odd shaped head..which is always a good thing :?

now on 2nd Arai (Astro J), previously used Bell.

They fit me, beautifully made and the quality lasts, visors work well and don't leak, Astro J has excellent ventilation, light, rather noisy but probably not worse than average.

Might consider Schuberth S1 (not the flip type) next as they're suposed to be quiet. :?

Got a Kiwi  had it for 4 years - bought it without knowing what I want out of a helmet. All I knew is I wanted a cheap Matt Black 8)

It's heavy, it's not quiet, but I have nothing to compare it to so could say if it's any louder than another.

Arai.. its the ONLY helmet make that would fit my head properly....

I have some other thing THH I think.. thats a tad to big for me, but I use it for going back and fore to work, and for pillion use.. my Arai cost to much to get it caked in cement and stuff :D

I'm a Shoei man, its the most comfortable thing I've worn, but I liked my old Suomy, bar the poor quality paint work. It did me well, till it hit the deck, having said that it stopped me loosing anymore brains...

mine's an AGV er.... Demon?? don't much like it, tbh. Visor mists up too easy and rain doesn't run off it too well either. On top of that it isn't all that comfortable. Looks nice tho :?

Yeah, know what you mean. As I said, kinda miss the Arai.
Console myself with the fact that the Rossi rep looks great and was a
very good deal.

Shoei Xr-900 picture of it is my avatar

Really pleased with it quiet, light and comfy

If it helps my brother had a shoei which got wrecked in an off then he had an AGV rossi rep, and now has a suomy gunwind

He says out of all of them he liked the shoei best, he says the suomy is good but he hates the AGV he says that its noisy, draughty and doesnt seal around the visor properly so he gets wet when it rains. Although because the seal was so bad it never fogged up !!!

hope this helps

Bieffe BM7 (flip-front) for me..............

Bad points..............very poor visor sealing, noisy and unstable doing lifesavers at anything over 50mph, seat-belt buckle strap jobbie slips on long rides...........

.........the upsides are that it remains very comforable, well ventilated and is convenient in town, paintwork has lasted very well and it still looks really cool in matt blue 8)

Oh........and it was only £99 from Fowlers, so I can't complain really.

BMW Sportintegrale next for me

Mine's a HJC ZF-7.

Had it for almost 3 years with no complaints. Can't comment on noise as I've nothing to compare it with. Its ok with earplugs on longer trips.

I would consider another as I think they are excellent value for money.

Arai... beautifully made

All the Arai's I've ever looked at, seemed like they were flimsy and about to fall apart! Not what I'd pay £400+ for!

Having looked across the Shoei range, I believe they're the best on the market, and if your noggin fits them, then that's what you should aim for.

In my opinion that is  but of course I'm biased!

Well, I had a look at a few in the shop, and aside from not fitting, which is fair enough, I was amazed at the pathetic catches and vents.

The mechanism for locking the visor is just asking to break, very flimsy, and basically as far as I could tell, it didn't work - the fitting was so bad!

The vents were light cheap plastic, poorly secured with the helmet itself - after a few months of filling up with flies and road crap, I'm sure that they'd eventually break as your had to force them open and closed.

I wouldn't spend over £200 on a lid, I just don't see the point.

A £400 lid isn't twice as good as a £200 lid so why spend the extra ?

I think with the expensive brands you're just paying for the name and some fancy graphics and subsidising their sponsorship/advertising budget.

Just my opinion.

You rarely getting something twice as good for double the money, small improvements cost. I paid £300 for an Arai Quantum F 18 months ago and whilst the side pods did ping off a couple of times when removing the visor, that was more down to me than the lid. I can change the visor in a few seconds now with no pinging at all! It's also really comfortable and well vented. I love the look of the Roof Daytona but I found the material inside is rough and poorer quality compared with the Arai. Not crash tested it yet though - and not planning to either, but sure it will hold up well if it needs to!

I HAVE crash tested an Arai Quantum F and can say that it does indeed do what it says on the tin. (OK what it says on the website then)

Got a Shoei Raid, found the top vent gets a bit stickey and it is kinda noisy but its a great fit and very comfy.

Want an XR1000 next to relegate the Raid as a backup/passenger lid.

TC Alloy would do nicely, or the Diabolic lid too :D

Saying that I like the look of the TiTech AGV lids

Yup, I'm another Shoei XR1000 owner. It's v light, the seal works faultlessly, the vents really work and the visor mechanism is easy. I've added a Foggy which is also a great bit of kit.

I have been worried recently that the lid might be a smidgin too big for me though, now that my head's smooshed the lining for a year. At motorway speeds it has a tendancy to lift and in consequence I ride along with my mouth wide open to compensate. Is this normal for nakkid riders I wonder?

Mine got the same way, but I washed the cheek pads in the washing amchine on a cool wash and after I had put them back in the right way  the lid felt much tighter again.

Yep mine does the same on my naked at motorway speeds. Have been meaning to try a scarf to stop the wind getting up inside.
Tried tightening the chin strap but this nearly strangled me.

Any other suggestions to cure this?

BillyC
13-10-04, 03:40 PM
Not sure stopping the air going up inside would make a difference, the lift is generated by the shape of the helmet and the airflow over the top of it.

Do your chin strap up tighter!

Arai RX7, perfect fit and despite Bill's ramblings Arais are the best quality lids I've ever had, I've previously owned other Arais, Shoei, Bell, AGV (4), FM, (crap), Simpson, Kangol.
There are regulations about sticky out bits of lids, (that they must break off at a given force), so as not to snap your neck, this may explain what some see as flimsy, as far as the side pods and visor mechanism go, my most recent Arai is five years and I don't know how many visor swaps old, (yes, I need a new one), everything still works perfectly, when, (if), I clean it the paint is still good too, very highly recommended, if it fits of course as that's the most important factor.

Nice lid, comfey, easy visor changes, doesn't leak. In my opinion a bit noisy for out of town use but earplugs are cheap and I've never had a lid I thought of as quiet, so maybe I'm just overly sensitive to these things.

If nothing else buy a helmat with a removable lining, as replacing mine after 2 years use has made it feel (and smell) Brand new.

FInish has held up well, and I'm happy with it :)

middle of the range arai, good for not misting, little bit noisy but bearable and I also use a hyperoptics visor insert in it which stops it fogging and goes from green in normal/dim light to cobalt blue in bright light so it saves changing visor.very happy overall
want an astro r though................one day.....
