whats the best way of cleaning a rear sprocket ?
its currently off the bike (im changing the tyres )
it is caked in muck , im thinking soaking it in white spirit . . . is this a good idea ? or are there easier ways

(i tried using muck - off , but its not doing anything to this caked on goodness)

cheers again guys

if it's already off the bike have you considered buying a new one, they are pretty cheaper. Otherwise a good soaking a parafin and some elbow grease should work!

If it's badly corroded (as opposed to just grease) then stick one of those wire brush attachments on to a power drill and just run it all over (though if it's gold anodised then this will tarnish badly). Then get out your tube of Autosol and mix it with a large dollop of elbow grease.

Well, if you can get hold of some caustic soda, you could just leave it. But handle with (extreme) care

Then get out your tube of Anusol and mix it with a large dollop of elbow grease.

This, you mean?:

just done some experiment
divided my sprocket into four's
1st quater - used industrial degreaser and hot water
2nd quater - used muck off and hot water
3rd parafin
4th WD40

WD40 was the easiest.

spray plenty on dry - then use kitchen roll to remove the wd40 - the muck comes with it.
2 or three wipes brings it up spotless.

BUT - dont use water - it just spreads the WD40 and muck everywhere.

so in future - you know how to do it :)
im quite proud of myself for making a posative contribution to this site :) :) :)

i now have a spotless sprocket and chain :) :) :) along with new drum brake shoes and a new rear tyre and a shiny clean back wheel :) :) :)

till i use it through winter again (my 125cc)

600cc = more petrol money, more cleaning, more chance of some bugger pulling out on me and wrecking it.

I found that dumping it in a bowl of acid is the easiest way

just to throw my 2c in, I always give the sprockets a quick spray with the chain cleaner when I'm doing the chain. Also a quick spray on the swing arm does wonders for the chain lube and muck stuck to it.
