View Full Version : Red Lights . . .

Anyone here know how long it takes to get the dreaded letter in the post?

I almost jumped red light, right after neraly being wiped out by an idiot that swerved accross 2 lanes to make a late exit.

riding down the road and come up to one of those weird stupid intersections where lanes merge from the right and people try exit off the left.

anyhow, nearly got flattened by an idiot and so, was looking in my rear view mirrors and spotted the changing light a bit late.

I did stop, but I think I was over the sensors(though not in the path of crossing traffic)

Now I am not sure if I crossed the sensors while the lights were still amber, or whether it had changed by the time I got over it!

Anyone know what the penalties(mainly points wise) will be if I am nicked, or whether it is worth appealing if I do, seeing as I did stop, albeit about a yard too far!

In general I will NEVER cross a red light, as I do not wan't to endanger myself or anyone else, and this was a genuine mistake! In fact, in 8 years of driving, I can honestly not think of one single occurence that I have crossed a red light at all!

Unless there was a camera at the lights, I wouldnt worry.

However, if you have been seen by police or a camera, then they need to send you a notice of intended prosecution within 14 days of the offence.

If you plead guilty straight away, it will be 3 pts and £60. You can appeal in a court of law but this may result in you getting a larger penalty.

if its like a speeding ticket you can still be nip'ed up to 6mnths later

Worry ye not :D

Traffic light camera work like speed cameras, i.e. they need to "flash" you and take a photo. They are timesd to go off a second or so after the red light becomes illuminated and the angle of "view" tends to be towards the middle of the junction or over the other side of it.

The sensors in the road are part of a system (usually one called SCOOT) which is used to vary traffic light timings. The sensors above the traffic lights measure queue-length not speed.

If you didn't cross the road you're safe.

Sorry, but that's bollox*

NIPs have to be sent out within 14 days. The only exception is if one was stopped for speeding by a uniformed copper and cautioned at the time of the offence. Effectively, all a NIP does is give you a written caution.

The six month period that you're thinking about is the time that the Police have to lay the information before the Court

The summons from the Court can appear anytime after the information has been laid.

[* no offence. And no, I don't want to fight you  ]

I agree. He needs to be issued with a 'warning formula' at the road side by a copper or sent the NIP within 14 days.

...NIP...14 days - they must SEND the original NIP within 14 days - unfortunately, it doesn't seem to matter how much later you receive it. We run a few company cars, all leased, so are all registered to various leasing companies. If one of our guys has transgressed, the NIP gets sent to the leasing company. They send it back to the issuer giving us as the driver. It then gets sent out again to us.

Again - correct

14 days from the day of offence in which to post the NIP and the first port of call will be the Registered Keeper. Who else would they send it to?

Sorry - must be a bit dense today. I can't see your point.

Nothing wrong with being wrong, but sometimes something that's wrong get's repeated so often it becomes accepted as the truth - "Speed Cameras Save Lives", for example

Wasn't having a go - sorry if you took it that way.

I'll go home now

yeah as jabba says - them things are sensors.
and if there was a policeman there - he would have seen the whole situation and not bothered.

round this way - if your ever in a cab , youl notice that red lights dont seem to stop them.

also - them sensor things are good in some ways , if the lights are red, get your front wheel up a bit and flash them three times, and the lights go green. . .
dunno if this is a rumour - but it seems to work for me

Um .. I'm a traffic engineer (DON'T HIT ME!!! ) and the only things that can catch you (as far as I know) is if you are seen, or a speed camera (and then only if you are speeding). The sensors you are talking about vary in use, but are not used to detect infringements. Mostly they are used to a) detect if vehicles are waiting on an arm of a signalised junction, or b) count traffic. Jabba, yes, there is a system called 'SCOOT', but it is a special centralised multi-junction system usually employed in dense urban areas and synchronises the junctions so that you get 'cohorts' of traffic flowing through a city (which is why, if you hit a red, you will hit a red next time, etc, and vice versa). So it does control the timings, but not directly. As for sensors above the lights that count queues ... I don't thnk so, as whenever I need to redesign signals I have to send traffic surveyors out there to phsycially count traffic, or get an ATC (automatic traffic counter) installed (i.e. one of those sensors I mentioned before). I'm not sure what you're referring to there *puzzled* as I haven't noticed anything myself, not that I notice a lot!

Anyway, this post is by way of saying that I don't think you should worry about getting nicked! :D

Oh, and for the record ... speed cameras DO actually reduce fatalities. They don't necessarily reduce numbers of accidents, but they reduce their severity, resulting in saved lives :)

You can do whatever you like with statistics.

Take a section of road with no accidents, one day someone dies in a RTA, put up a speed camera, no further accidents.

The safety lobby will claim that the camera has reduced the accident rate when in all probablity it would have reverted back to how it was before without the camera being there.
Of course there's no way to prove it either way, thus making all statistical analysis involving cameras null and void.

Has anyone included the fact that cars are much safer than ever before and this has probably reduced the fatality rate?

I dont think the family of the woman mowed down last week by a driver whos attention was focused on the speedo due to a camera will agree with you.

In statistics, that's called "Regression to the Mean"

My mate binned his nike last week, coz he was watching his speedo as he got past the camera, and some old bag drove in front of him!
By the time he looked up, she was too close and he slammed anchors, dropping his bike!

Something that's not for the faint-hearted, I assure you

Actually, there's a good webpage about Regression to the Mean here (http://www.safespeed.org.uk/rttm.html) on the SafeSpeed website.
