..Spinning around like kylie in gold hotpants i was this morning. Why?

Diesel! First and last time that going to happen. I have been on the floor too much now, so Doris is up for sale.

Still i am walking and talking. Ache a little though.

Bike, well, the R&G's doen what they where meant to do, coming off with nothing more than a broken rear brake leaver, and for some strange reason a busted screen.

Had enough of this biking malarky, so going to take my chances on the train.

Sorry to hear about the crash, good to hear you're still in one piece though.

How about you fix the bike, keep it in the garage and try the train for a few days\weeks then see how it feels.

I've crashed a few times and never wish to repeat it. But then I have spent 3 years without a bike and it was **** to say the least. Getting back on the road was like a new lease of life (sounds cheesy but true).

Sorry to hear it Viney, But risking the trains on my bit of the railway, thats a bit drastic, I cancel the things so dont expect any favours. Why do you think I ride to work. But I've found some new hazards this week.
Wet cardboard boxes on right turns, really make you think about keeping the back wheel on the floor.
And just to make it sick, was going into the New cross one way system and ran over a dead squirel lying in the road and nearly binned the bike.

Im sorry to hear that m8, but that is exactly the reason i sold up, ive slipped a few times and had a twitcher moment, plus as iv'e said the other muppets using the road. Id rather have my life and the family than pleasure on the bike. I sold the bike on Friday and got my car the same day 2.2 DTi Vectra. The last ride was horrid knowing it was the last time i was going to ride (a bike) for a long time gave her a blast then got in the car and i was off. I miss it and ive only been off the bike a few days so i hope your prepared to MISS it.

I know what youa re saying. I wont miss it to be honest. The 1st couple of years where good fun, then it just got to the point of another ride to work, another ride around the same roads in kent/sussex/surrey etc. My passion has always been four wheels, so i think i'll stick to them form now on. had a twichy moment myself yesterday, the smile on my face turned to a look of pure terror in nanosecond. managed to stay upright but the road stank of deisel when I stopped to compose myself.

Cut short my ride and limped home scared that any residue may have stayed on my tyres and I was about to slide down the road.

I am glad you are ok and the bike is not too badly scared

How about you just ride off road. Not neccessarily on the dirt but on a track away from diesel and cars? Sell the bike get a track bike and have fun that way. Then you get to have the best of both worlds.

Just a thought. I bought a DR350s to do that same with on friday. So I shall mostly be getting we and dirty this winter :D but my big stupid grin should keep me warm. :D

Really sorry to hear this Ian, it comes as a real shock to the system when something like this happens. As a lot of other people have suggested, cool off mentally for a few days and then reassess the situation. Biking's too good to quit, try and work out if there is any way you could have spotted the diesel and if so, well next time you'll be better prepared.

This time of year the roads turn to sh*te so watch out all, summer's gone and we all need to be extra vigilant as slippy surfaces are now the norm till spring.

I totaly disagree. You can loose the passion for anything. If its in your blood, then its a different matter. i have met loads of wondeful people over the years that i have been on two wheels. I like the comerardary(sp?) of it all. The 1st 3 or so years i loved it. Always organising bike rides, going out with mates, living for the bike so to speak, hell 35000 miles says that i enjoyed riding, but this year, my heart just isnt in it. Just my thoughts.

Perhaps you should tuck Doris away for the winter and get back on in the spring?

If you clock up most of your miles on a difficult commute in 'orrible weather you're never going to enjoy riding as much as you should. Maybe if you take a break and come back when the weather starts to improve and you can ride your favorite roads without having to be somewhere you might well remember why you got a bike in the first place?

Hope you'll stay on the board and come to meets either way :!:

What is there to enjoy about riding nowadays. I will end up seriously injuring myself one day, and personaly, i dont want that. Im not disciplined enough to 'calm down', one of the reasons that i still have the SV and not something larger. The bike is a commuting tool. The by product of weekends out and about where fun. I havent been out on her at weekends for months now. Well, the last ride was with Swiss and Suki. I can alway buy another bike in the future if i choose to.

Really sorry to hear about your experience, however think it through for a while and then decide. That diesel is one bad element to find on the road.I know it is bad for you guys as due to the climate in the U.K. it often stays damp on the road for some time.
Over here it does tend to evaporate but there is a noticeable residue that remains and even this has an unwanted affect on your grip. I get REAL nervous when I see it and try to adopt my entry lines to avoid it. A simultaneous two wheel mini slip a couple of weeks ago saw me cut short what would normally be a round trip of around 100km purely because it shook me up so much,(and I have never been nervous on a bike!) I turned around and limped my way home at a snails pace.

Glad you're OK mate. Sorry to hear what happened. I love riding the bike, but sometimes I sit and think to myself is it worth it. It probably isn't but it is too tough to give up at the moment. Seriously though THE TRAIN!??! Are you completely barking. Surely there must be another option. I did the train (so to speak) for 3 months from Portsmouth to Basingstoke and it was just the pits. So bad I can't find words infact. If your mind is made up then I am sure no-one here will try and convince you otherwise. However, it would be good if you popped in from time to time. Your wealth of advice and experience has been invaluable. Good luck mate.

Viney, only you know what's right for you... But a little time off could be for the best rather than jumping right off and into a sale... Conveniently, this is also a bloody awful time to try and sell a bike, so if you're not needing the money <now> then it makes economic sense to stick Doris (people who name their bikes, AARGH!) in a garage till the spring. Gives you a chance to change your mind as well- which works both ways, if you do change your mind then you've saved yourself a fortune, and if you don't, then you'll never hae any uncertainty that you've done the right thing.

Hats off to you Vinney, if you really do decide to quit. I wont try to persuade you against quitting. But I will say that it's now winter and biking is not as enjoyable as in the summer (for some). It's easy to get disheartned at this time of year. Can I suggest that you put the bike in the garage and wait for the good weather to return. If you still don't get the feeling for it, then fix her and flog her. You'll get a better deal when the sun starts to shine again.

Everyone knows what I was thought I thought about me and biking after my "big scare" but it as soon as I was back out of hospital my mind had changed. (Yes it IS in the blood for me).

Whatever you decide, best of luck with it. If you do decide to go back to a cage, then do me a favour, STAY OUT OF MY WAY.

I get a real sense of sadness when an experienced rider like you decides to quit. I consider myself a newbie and look to this site for advice, so it knocks my confidence in what I'm doing when I read of the fatalities, very bad accidents and even minor spills resulting in guys like you deciding enough is enough. I think it's because I spend so much time mentally justifying to myself why I commute everyday on the bike instead of taking buses and trains or even pumping pedals in the car that when I read this stuff, I have to go thru it all again. It's easy to say don't give up - only you know if you could have possibly avoided the spill by riding slower, taking more care etc. Anyone who hasn't come off totally unexpectedly can't possibly understand the feelings you must have that your life is out of your hands in certain circumstances. Anyhow sorry to see you go - just my thoughts on the matter. Glad you are ok and all the best.

I have said this loads of times, as everyone knows. But i'm still there riding. I've had 3 big crashes so far,
1. 50mph into a car and wrote the bike off.
2. Nice little slide into one £2000 worth of damage.
3. Forced off by some w a n k e r cutting me up in the rain. £2,000 of damage.

But I love the bike, the wife and the kids and really really hate the train, even though it's cheaper.

So still riding, It is ******* when it happens, but Vinyl everytime you sit on the train next summer you'll see the odd bike going past on the road etc etc and you'll think that was cool!
Put the bike away for 6 months and get it back out in the spring, when the diesel is all dry and start again.

My dad was ****ed off the say the least, and was threatening to turn the SV into scrap with the blow torch and angle grinder   after he had picked me up from Perth A&E.

I was seriously thinking of getting the SV repaired and then selling the bike too, because I had hurt myself too much. Shoulder joint, right knee, and right hip got the rough treatment, but I was back at work within a week. Still couldn't move pallets with a pallet truck, but could drive the artic. Getting in and out of the cab was good fun and sore... :?

Ever since the last "off", I have lost confidence in my cornering, but I stayed off the bike for a month, and then got back on. The riding bug was still there..... I am still slower than my mates now on local runs.

The fear of coming off again and giving myself more serious injuries still haunts me, hence the slower riding, but I still get out on the bike to keep the practice up.

The bug will bite you again sometime in the future.

Yup, I can totally relate to that... Though the only time I've ever considered giving up on biking was when my XV125 kept on braking down in the ****ing rain :)

Totally with you there jimmy,

My accident was back in June and I still don't have confidence back like I used too....

Its crap but I still enjoy riding, just slower than b4

I'm getting there I guess. I am determined that it will be fun again if I keep at it. Don't think I will ever be like I was before. But then that will probably be a good thing

I'm hoping to buy a bike this week - a winter hack ER5 & will buy something a bit more exciting come the spring, but the seller lives down on the farm in the middle of nowhere, I don't even know if it's in England or in Wales (Shropshire/Powys border anyway) but the river's flooded and you can only get there on a Massey Ferguson grrrrrr
