View Full Version : Well there's a myth exploded!

I have thought for many years that a fast car will always out-perform a fast bike round the twisty stuff - if only 'cos of the extra rubber on the road.
However, on Fifth Gear last night, they raced a Ducati 999 against a Lamborghini (round a track) and the Ducati won!
Who knew? ...

I was very surprised too. The last such 'test' I read about must have been in the late 70's, when Bike pitted a CBX up against an Aston Martin Vantage (I think). Straights - CBX won, wiggly bits, the AM.

dont 5th gear do repeats?
Dam I missed that.
It's on again tonight.
A lovely piece of riding
Another piece was to compare 3 fuel-effecient cars.
The Ducati would've had a chance here too !
And it was cheaper than the Toyota Prius on test
As Vicki said - use the money you save on fuel to buy more motorbikes

Does that mean that the roads will soon be full of boy-racers and mid-life-crisis-victims on Ducati 999's.
Collect bits of crashed Ducati and you might manage to get enough parts to build yourself one for free.

They are available from the same chap who does the TopGear TV rips

Not got yesterday show yet.. so if you miss the repeat download it later in the week.
Wish I could ride like him...... Sliding the rear into the corners, lovely !!!
It was a real surprise to see the Duke win espescially as it was a really twisty track. hairpins the lot.
Top gear did a similar thing a year or two back with a Porsche (I think) and an R1. The Porsche just pipped it.
Still, you are getting hyper performance for £10k rather than £100k with a bike.

I didn't see the report, however like all experiments (I use this term loosely!) it is possible to alter the input parameters to create a specific outcome. In this case I would suggest that a Lamborgini is not the best car for a twisty road. Yes there powerful with great acceleration, but are also big with a large-ish turning circle. I have been on a number of car trackdays and regularly see people with Lotus Elise's etc. caining Ferari's and similar.
I think that this comparison has so many in-built differences (abilities of the cars/bikes, abilities of the drivers, road conditions, knowledge of the course etc.) that the results are largely irrelevant to the wider world. We should all know that on modern roads in the UK a bike will be fast purely due to the fact that they can filter through traffic - case closed.

Allseeing, it was a Giarrdo so it's not exactly a huge car...........not sure what your point was.
Next week they are doing the same thing but this time the car is some kind of track-bred racer so it's not exactly a fair fight. Nothing can beat a bike in terms of price over performance. Impressive riding from the guy on the duke!!
Don't know about anyone else but I'd love to see Shumacher vs Rossi!!!

BRING IT ON!!!!!!!!!!
(although that damn Ferrari goes round corners on rails)
... and when cars get that fast, you just can't get a bike to out-gun it on the straights 'cos the front wheel just comes up all the time.

yeah, thinking about it, the dame F1 car would probably win. Faster corner speed, better launch. bah, who cares, F1 is ****.

The only reason F1 cars go round corners so fast is downforce... so to make it fair I suggest we sabotage the car by removing the wings
Although shumi would probably run rossi over if he thought he was going to lose :?

I can't remember which program it was, but recently a TV show 'did' a F1 car vs a Fireblade vs a powerboat somewhere. Forget the power boat... The Fireblade was all there for a few hundred meters off the line then the F1 car passed it like it was standing still.

That was fifth gear too... The bike never had a chance once the F1 car got its grip down.... Still quite close tho

what about F1 verse the ducati GP bike (desmocedichi), I heard it has a launch control system and we know it can reach 215+mph with wee caparosi on board. that would be a close one.
