Ok. Questions for the relatively inexperienced (i.e. me):

Faring lowers
Bellypan

Apart from looking cool, why have them? Improved aerodynamics? better crash protection? better protection from the elements? What are the big factors here?

its all about trying to get your bike to look like a race bike.

all race bikes HAVE to have a belly pan that holds at least 5litres of fluid and this can be in the form of a belly pan or fairing lowers.

some people also say that the lowers offer more weather protection

My bike came with lowers when I brought it.... It does provide a bit more wind protection on motorway journeys and stops your legs getting as wet too....

but if that justifies the price or not is another matter... Its mostly down to cosmetics...

Same for the bellypan I think, I cant see any real reason for needing one
