Hey People,

I'm after some advice on riding after I nearly did something daft on my bike Saturday afternoon...

It was cold, wet and miserable. I pulled off from some lights where the is a dog leg kink in the road immediately after lights.

Now i've done this piece of road hundreds of times and I don't know if it was the cold, if there was diesel, or I just overcooked it (probably) but the back end broke away big time.

I then backed off and got a bit of a tank slapper (my first since I passed my test 4 years ago).

Question is did I do the right thing by just backing off (gently) to get the rear wheel to grip? Don't fancy dropping the bike if it ever happens again (hope it doesn't, clean underwear time...) :?

Probably best to keep the gas on, but actually doing that is 'kin difficult. The natuaral thing to do is snap of the gas. I quite often wheelspin in the wet.

I've done that too, several times in fact. The first time it happened it was a bit scarey. Thankfully I didn't panic, and my natural instinct when it happens is to pull the clutch in... and I think thats probably the best thing to do.

Defo roll off the gas slowly.. if you shut the throttle it'll grip and spit you off

Or just hold the throttle constant

its happened to me a couple of times, if you stayed on then you did the right thing :D

Thanks for the encouragement guys :)

There was no way I was going to let go of the throttle instantly - done that in cars (deliberately in the snow in car parks) and know the results :)

A definate trip to the UK next year I think for the safety course at donnington... I can't find one over here - and if I did I couldn't understand the instructor well enough to get my moneys worth from the course...
