There is a vast amount of knowledge in these great halls, so does anyone know a relatively easy and safe way to learning to pop wheelies, small, then gaining skill?
I know my old SV only wheelied slightly just on the throttle when it was nealy empty (I dont weigh much) but there must be another way?
I don't want to do a full on wheelie yet though.. just to learn the basics?

Waiting till the summer is probably the first step in doing it relatively safely.

there are a few threads about this, each of which big ape has replied to  . browse the forums or search for it.
Try second gear @ 40kmh, (sorry dont know what that is in old money) you will have to clutch it though. You could try and slide your **** back to the rear seat to shift a bit'o'weight to help with the lift to begin with, but you might find that it goes up a bit quick. Best advice...use someone elses bike if you can.
