View Full Version : Endorsement/Points
I have 6 points on my licence which are due to be removed on the 7th June 2005.
My insurance renewal is due the end of January. Someone told me that while its 4 years from date of conviction before the DVLA will remove points from your licence, after 3 years you no longer have to declare them to insurance companies.
Can anyone confirm this and show me where it's stated?

You must tell the truth on the proposals, for example, if they ask if you've had any convictions in the last 5 years you have to tell them, whether your points are still there or not.
The points are only relevent for if you get to keep your license when more points are added on.
BTW, this is not legal advice and I'm only telling you what I've been informed by a couple of people who ought to know, but still could be mistaken.

If you lie to your insurance company (like if they ask you 'have you been involved in any accidents, offenses or endorsements within th last five years) then if you need to claim at any point and they find out it will automatically nullify your insurance as on their part you did not adhere to the terms of contract in the first instance

It's a pain in the **** but it's true. Insurance companies want to have 5 years of history even though the points don't count after 3 years and may be physically removed from your licence after 4.
.
Different Insurance Companies have different questions. Normally they will ask about endorsements and convictions over the previous 5 years, however there are some that are only concerned about the previous 3.
Either way, they'll all take into account how long ago they were.
For a standard SP30, you probably won't get stung very hard, if at all in some cases. However, if you leave out the details of more serious ones - and they can and do check, then you're basically liable for fraud.
Nice
In this case, honesty is the best policy (pun intended  ).

There seem to have been a number of posts of late in relation to insurance questions.
While I am not, in any way trying to offer legal advice/advice of any description FYI insurance contracts put the would be insured under an obligation of the utmost good faith.
This means that not only must you answer ALL the questions asked by the Insurer on the proposal form absolutely honestly but you must ALSO disclose to the Insurer any other information, even if not asked for, which would affect their decision to insure you/your bike. [-o< [-X
I don't think anybody discloses absolutely everything and the reality is that the Insurers don't really want any more information than is requested on their standard forms in the majority of situations.
However, the consequences of not disclosing material information to the Insurer is that they may be able to void your insurance contract in the event of a claim and, from memory, additionally get to keep any premium you have paid to date. Again, from memory, this applies whether or not the information you kept from the insurance company has any relevance to the subject of your claim i.e. if you make a claim as a result of crash damage the Insurer could void the contract because you said your shed was brick lined when it wasn't.
Anyway, just a friendly word of warning. :D

Very perceptive... and there I was trying to be subtle!
You should also tell 'em if you get points/banned after the policy has been taken out and not just at renewal time.
