View Full Version : no benefit for bikers
It really annoys me that bikers are given almost no consideration when it comes to insuring a car. Im 22 and am looking at my first car, the insurance is ridiculous! Just for a joke I got a quote for a fiat panda 750cc and it came back as £1300 tft! When my SV was £510!
Surely riding something with 2 wheels that will accelerate as fast as a ferrari should give you some kind of discount! I think that is a complete ****take. I cant even sit in a slow car these days, I feel like its not even moving! I need something with a bit of grunt but unfortunately 'the computer says nooo'
:x
I do wonder that.. I've been riding for 9 years and yet if I pass next week and try to insure the car it will be 1400 quid. Even though I've got more road knowledge then most of the people out there??? Or is it I'm just filling the forms in wrong.
Mate... keep searching... you'll get a better deal. The quote you're refering to is basically the insurance company's way of refusing you insurance. However, because the market is so heavily regulated and common terms agreed, they can't actually refuse you insurance without a good reason - like you're epileptic or something... so they just quite you the stupidest rate they can think of.
I've just reinsured my car after a year off the road... and got good quotes from Admiral, and Elephant. H&R might have been good, but don't seem to offer an online quoting service, and one that Coombest recommended to me told me I was a criminal and wouldn't quote me.
I'm not a criminal by the way!
What I'm ideally looking for is a joint bike-car policy.... does anyone do this?
The system is a mockery.
You can't use a bike's NCD on your car or visa-versa, but if you claim on one policy the NCD on the other will be affected. :?
I wish some had the "jacobs" and the money to challenge this in Court.

If only..............
I got really wound up when I insured a car last year. They said I could use the no claims bonus from my bike, but I wouldn't then be able to use it for insuring the bike!!!! As though if I used it for a car I'd suddenly 'forget' how to ride!

To be allowed to transfer a NCD between bike and car is a breakthrough.
To not be able to use it on the bike at the same time is normal, you can't have two cars using the same NCD.

Carol Nash do it.. its a Car-Bike-house policy

Any good?

Insurance companies could make a killing if they done this...then again they probably make more money by forcing folk to take out seperate policies.
Tesco and Admiral gave me the best quotes for car insurance last year, might be worth a wee look.

I've had my bikes insured with them for a few years now and have always been happy with them. They always seem to know what they're talking about on the phone too which always helps

Oh yes... of course, I have two vehicles, that must mean that I'm two people!
Annoying isn't it... but has always been the case :?

Why so much? I'm 22 with 0 years no claims and my Peugeout 106 was about £400 TPFT

The majority of the premium is to cover damage to other vehicle and property if the accident is your fault, and the rest if you have the bike/car stolen. As you can only drive/ride one vehicle at a time (if you are sole insured) then premiums for more than one vehicle should only be slightly higher than single policies and NCB/NCD could be used regardless. I'm sure there are car policies that let you add on other vehicles at a fraction of the price.
As for the quote on the Panda, ouch!
Just to annoy you...
Here in Holland you can get all your vehicles on one insurance... I had my bike insured over here (GPZ500 2 weeks lisence 50 per month FC) and when I got a Dutch car they added a 50% reduction as I was running more than one vehicle...
On the other hand:
Spitfire 1500, garaged, 10 years NCB 500gbp+ FC WHY?

Oh yes... of course, I have two vehicles, that must mean that I'm two people! drives me up the wall when that happens... and in my case its with 2 BIKES!!
after realising that Im not insured on the cbr while I thought I was, I phoned MCE up to get the 2nd bike put on the policy.... only thing is they have a claim recorded against my insurance...
so phoned the claims line up... eventually got the right number... oh the drivers made a claim against you was what mce told me... equity redstars claims line said they MAY make a claim so it goes against my insurance but they havent actually claimed against me... but they have up to a year from the accident to do so...
so back to mce - has to stay against my insurance even though THERE IS NO BLOODY CLAIM!!! All because its unresolved
so now have seperate insurance for the cbr... only good thing is the kent postcode has practically reduced my premiums to nothing....

Carol Nash do an 'all in one' policy - this covers cars, bikes, home etc.
I've just been to the website & couldn't see anything, but I've got a leaflet at home about it... I'll dig it out when I'm at home tomorrow for you ;)
Someone recommended "More Than" for my Suzuki Cappuccino. I did an on-line quote and came up with £174 fully comp protected NCD legal cover with a lower excess than I'm paying now with NU Direct (premium is £100 more). Guess where I'm going at renewal!
Also they offer the same NCD for a second car policy, great news if you have 2 cars.
No idea if they do bikes. Bike insurance tends to be a bit more specialised. I use NU for the bikes because I can cover 4 bikes very competitively, though I think Carole Nash do a similar scheme.

you can't have two cars using the same NCD.
Why, I can't drive them both at the same time ???
.
do you know that carol nash now insure 1 in 3 bikes on the road wow  Anyways try a company called screentrade they gave my wife a really good deal on a 1.8i 16v cav with no, no claims..
I wonder if part of the reason behind high premiums etc is the distinct lack of loyalty shown by customers nowadays.
I mean, it's so competitive now that they almost seem surprised if you don't move company come renewal date!
I had my new Nissan Micra insured with Eagle Star direct, then at 24 with no NCB - they were the cheapest. When I traded it in for the MG two years later they were still the cheapest so I stuck with them... then kinda got fed up with the rigmarole of shopping round and never really bothered to change - been with them 11 years now!
Thing is, when my other half got his first car, as he had been a named driver on my insurance they 'gave' him a years NCB when he took out his policy.
They also duplicated my NCB with the MG when I got the 4x4 as well about three years ago!
Even better, when that was nicked about a year ago, they promised it wouldn't affect my premium on the MG - which it hasn't. They also settled with an offer on the stolen car (valuing it at £600, which was £200 more than I paid for it) within two weeks - even though it hadn't been recovered!
They also then gave me 3 years NCB as a courtesy when I got a new(er) 4x4.
Sometimes I guess it does pay to be too lazy to shop around (although I do check my quotes against a couple of others on line when board every now and then.)

i paid £1800 comp for my first car (new punto) wrote it off after 9 months (inxeperienced) and insurance got me a brand new punto, one year after passing my test my insurance is £2300 comp
on my bike i have 2yrs NCB (the car crash did not effect this)
cheapest quote so far for 2001 svs650 tpf&f £950
garaged
5000 miles per year
telling them its my second form of transport brought it down from £1000
on a different matter, i will be getting fairing lowers or a belly ban and a road legal end can for the bike, roughly how much will this put my insurance up, if out at all???
I am always complaining of the ammout that insurance companys want from me, but after looking at some other people it does not seem that bad condidering i live in Peckham London a bad place.
If you are in london with a car that has no immobiliser, you are going to get high quotes.
I am 22, for a Golf Mk4 TDI 115, i am being quoted about £1400 FC (£400 ex, mods are extra cost) for me and my mum as second. I have had a minor crash in a company car that put it up by £100. If you are 26 that should be much cheeper. It seems that when i added my mum as a second driver to my policy it brought it down by about 300-400, weird.
As for the bike the best quote i got was £788 TPFT £250ex and any mods.
Overall for my age, where i live and that i am still under 25 with a new bike licence and the car one for 2.5 years i seem to have a good deal i think.
You know your postcode (area you live) affects your insurance alot, if you nkow anyone who lives in he country ask if you can register the car at there address and insure it at that address as well, when i used to live in london my vauxhall cav used to cost about £500 fc now i live in norfolk it only cost about £180, although i now have 2 years no claims.

There are ways for it to be ok, for example, if you're at uni, you can leave the car/bike registered at your parents (or whereever) and just inform them that it will be stored overnight in a different postcode.
It's not as cheap as just lying, but you generally get a bit better rates as a result.
ahh the difference of a postcode...
try a croydon postcode, gpz500 worth about £2k got tpft quotes of around £600ish
now a romney marsh postcode, sv650s worth around £3k - £480 fully comp...
lets just say I didnt quibble cos I was expecting it to be over a grand...
