View Full Version : SRAD or 636 shock

I'm thinking of upgrading my rear shock soonish, and have narrowed my choices down to either a SRAD Gixer shock, or the kwak 636 shock.

Reason being is when at Cadwell the shock would begin to wallow/oscillate exiting slower turns, and generally on the road feels a bit choppy. I'm pretty sure from what I have read that the quality of riding experience with any of the above shock upgrades will be greatly improved over the standard unit.

Im trying to find out what would be most suited to my weight/riding style.

As far as im aware (have done a fair bit o research into this)

The Gixer Shock: Will fit with minor modification to the battery cradle/tank hinge assembly, will raise the ride height by about 3/4 inch, will have a slightly softer spring than the SV shock (can be rectified with good results by simply adjusting the preload).

The 636 shock: Again should fit with no/minor modifications (if anyone can clarify this it would be handy), may lower the ride height a little (easily rectified by modified shortened dogbones-which aren't a big problem for me to get), and has a spring which is similar to the SV(?) or slightly harder(?) (I know for sure the 636 shock is harder than the equivalent SRAD)

As far as ridng style and weight go, I would put myself as a brisk road rider, who does a few trackdays every year. My weight is 13.5-14 stone.

Hope someone can advise me on this matter.

Dan.

Hi mate,

I personally have just fitted a 636 shock, but i think its from a g model- bout 1999, its the one with the resevoir that sticks out the backat about 70 % from the shock, if this is the same shock ur thinking of, let me know and ill talk u through the mods needed,

Tell us all, as I'm looking for a GSXR one, but I can expand my search. :-)

Right then,

one the old shock is removed, get urself a thin nut and a bolt long enough to go through the bottom of the shock. as the suzuki shock is threaded but the otheres arn't!
the nut has to be thin as otherwise it clous the dog bones!
Bolt the new shock in place, do up tight and reinstall dog bones.
the undertray will need cutting, on the left hand side i have cut an arc to expose the adjustment, and on the bottom i have had to cut some awy to get the undertray to sit snug.
I used a dremel and a cutting disk, worked a treat but watch out for flying plastic!!

the battery will need relocating, in my case im putting it under the rear seat, buy some battery cable extenders 12" from partco or somwhere simmillar as they work a treat.

I am yet to work out how to fix the battery in the rear compartment, but will let you know how i do when its done, it will be a simple angle bracke job with any luck!!

and that pretty much it, yet to ride on it, and i will take pics when i can scrounge a digi cam!! the gold shock looks great!

i took the subframe off and had it shot blasted and powder coated, looks absolutly stuning!!!! like brand new and was a bargin at about 15 squid!!

Any questions, please do ask, all the best

Ok. not to sure about that bit... as I don't think the bat will fit. And it ain't a good idea to lay the bat on its back I think. Would it be possible just to move the fuses and stuff up and then just raise the battery a bit?

i dont think it should be a problem, but i do have a yussa gell battery, so no leaking problems,
with the shock i have got the resevoir sticks accross half the battery seat, so i couldnt relocate it n e where better!
however with the later shocks it might well be possible, would have to look into this one.

I run a 96 - 99 GSXR shock on my SV that I race. It is easy to install. You just need to shim the plastic battery tray down about 1/4 inch. It makes room for the battery. Then the top of the shock will hold the battery in place. Just put a small piece of foam on the side of the battery that would rub on the shock. It is very easy to do. Mine has been that way for 3 years now and no leaks.
BUT if you decide to use the GSXR shock, I STRONGLY RECOMMEND THAT YOU GET IT RE-SPRUNG. The stock GSXR spring is too soft. I tried just changing the pre-load but it isn't enough. Do yourself a favor and just get the right spring for it.

The 636 shock I am looking at has the resevoir mounted horizontally- I beleive its off a later bike, and will fit much easier than the earlier types in which the resevoir sticks out longways.

Any ideas regarding which is more suited to my use?

At 13 to 14 stone I would not ride the standard GSXR spring with a pillion, though with the preload adjusted it will about do for you alone. Don't eat any pies though :)

Cloggsy did you see how close the bolt came to the dog legs? I bolted mine from right to left as suggested but I have about 5mm one side (bolt head) and 1mm the other (nut side). Im a bit concerned as people say the shock moves side to side normally when riding. Personnally I can't see how that would happen but the 1mm side seems abit close to me.

I didn't really notice... I'll have to double-check - thanks for the 'heads up' :!:

Folks, I'm thinkin of changin my rear shock on K3 model too, from readin this thread, it seems the gixxer thou' will fit without any major mods--is this true? If so, which model gixxer shock will fit? (What year, etc?)

Well I have done the deed, and have purchased a 636B1 shock for my "classic" shape SV.

I'm not going to fit it immediately, as I want to wait until I have the time to make the install as neat as possible. I ended up chosing the 636 over the SRAD as the 636 seems better suited to my weight, and also it appears from reading the 636 is a good match for length.

I'll base the fitment on this http://www.svrider.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=24059

But I reckon that it could be done tidier, and thats what i'm going to aim for.

Also another good thread on shock swaps for all those thinking is this one: http://www.svrider.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?p=341702&highlight=636+shock#341702

Well once I have fitted mine I will let you all know how it goes and works for me. Until then sit tight.

The majority of shocks on eBay will come with the bolt supplied anyway ;)

P.S. I got my shock for £25 :D

P.P.S. Amarko5 got his for £15

BTW - An excellent fitting guide for installing the Gixxer shock can be found here (http://www.kuhnco.com/SV650/GSXRShockSwap/)*

If you haven't removed the tail section before, this (http://www.kuhnco.com/SV650/GSXRShockSwap/TailSectionRemoval/index.htm) is useful too*
