There's a stretch of road near me that is in the city but unlit for most of its length. (Holyrood Park). There are no derestriction signs at the ends of the lit sections. According to my reading of the relevant highways regulations there should be 30mph limit repeater signs at intervals along the road in the absence of highway lighting.

Does the absence of such signs constitute a defence if one was booked for doing say 50 on the unlit stretch? Not that it's happened you understand but it is a nice spot for a wee burst of speed. Just to make it more complicated it's a Royal Park with its own Bylaws. I haven't scrutinised the latter so I don't know if they say anything on the matter.

Anybody knowledgeable?

Interesting. :-k

I believe it's policed not by Lothain & Borders, but by the Royal Parks Constabulary and that it also falls into the catagory of 'Park Road' (not a public highway) and as such is legislated for by a separate act of parliment. I've no idea what the details of this are and the extent to which the RP constabulary and L&B cross over & co-operate.

Personally I'd be more concerned about attracting the unwanted attention of a swan than the boys in blue along that particular stretch of road!

I used to live in Duddingston & travelled through each day, and have seen that L&B still have powers of arrest in the park - although I'm not sure if L&B handle Traffic. I guy I used to work with at Scottish Widows was done on Old Church Lane for speeding about 6 years ago.

Cronos nails it I think, for the same reason the council aren't required to grit it. But what a fantastic road!
