Two newby questions-sorry

Sorry for these two questions,but I have no one else to ask.

1. The rear cog on my 1999svs, is a 44/525. The 44 would be teeth,is this standard?

2. How do I know if the chain needs adjusting? Do you measure the movement from the ground?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

check out the http://www.sv650.org/sv_manuals section for your particular model. Should check slack about halfway between sprockets, but as I say check the link above.

44 is standard for a SVS at that year. The naked SV had 45.

525 is the size of the chain, referring to the length (pitch) of the links between pin centres, and also the width or thickness of the sprocket it runs on.

Yes, refer to those manuals, but as a good guide I'd suggest that with the bike on its side stand, you should be able to just hold 2 links flat on the black rubbing strip on the underside of the swingarm up near the engine end with mild finger pressure (i.e. not having to push too hard).

It's better to have the chain with slightly too much slack rather than too little. Get someone else to sit on the bike while you check the chain, and you'll see that it gets quite a bit tighter as the suspension compresses. If it uses up all the slack and goes tight when you go over bumps it puts huge loads into the bearings and chain itself, accelerates the wear, and can even cause the chain to break.

Also look at the threads on Scottoilers. Not cheap, but greatly extend the life of the chain and minimises need to adjust and grease etc.

Replace the standard one with a Talon 46 and a chain from a naked one, well worth it and the new sprocket is only £17.
