View Full Version : Help with electric problems
Hi, after a little help. Just got my first bike at the weekend which is a 2001 SV650s. Riding home tonight, stopped to get petrol and when i restarted the bike i had no speedo, rev counter, rear lights, rear brake lights or dash lights.
All the cators still work and the front light works. The rear light comes on when i put the park lights on.
I know that this seems to points towards a fuse so i checked all of the fuses and they seem fine. I also don't think that one of the fuses control all of these things. I didn't check the main fuse as i assume if that went then the bike wouldn't start.
Any help would be appreciated.
Sounds like a fuse.
An issue which may be related with bikes of that age are 3 places where the wiring gets chafed.
Both screws which hold the rider's seat on are a shade too long and the wiring harness runs immediately behind and can get damaged.
Also under the pillion seat on the left side of the bike towards the rear the wiring runs round the edge of a bracket on the frame, and this too can chafe through.
Thank for that,
I gave it a look and also double checked the fuses but everything there is ok.
Any others ideas would be appreciated.

What bike is it?
It's an X plate SV650s
To make matters worse, i've just been out playing with it and just rechecked fuses and checked cables etc (did not disconnect anything though), went to start it which it did before, it started to turn over, made a clicking sound and now is dead. When i try to start it i get nothing all though the main fuse must be ok because the head light still works.

The clicking sound is the starter failing to turn the engine because of a lack of power... Charge your battery and that should be fine at least. but not a good sign.
The starter motor doesn't even click anymore but the battery is charged as i put on my datatool charger on Sunday.
Could it be a problem with an earth or am i looking at something a lot more serious.

Hmm. Out of my depth I'm afraid...

I would check battery charge level again. If it has gone flat since sunday you have a charging fault~alternator, regulator or shagged battery. If it is still charged then you have a wiring fault as suggested in your other replies. You will probably need help sorting that.Did you buy it from a dealer?
Thanks for all the help and suggestions.
Unfortuntely i bought it private so i'll just have to try and get a garage to look at it.
as your battery gets low, the bike shuts off non essential draw, likely your RR is fried being the reason your battery is low or dead

I know this is an old thread but ive got a 99sv t plate and i'm also havin elec issues - yesterday on my way home the lights/rev/all elecs went except the hi beam(which is on a diff circuit) and my ignition. I got hom and checked the fuses and the signal fuse had gone - after blowin a few fuses I found it was when i was usijng the brake (front or rear) so figure may be bad bulb so removed the bulbs and changed the fuse again and trried her again - all was ok but when i pressed the brake in the lights etc went very dim then when i released the brake they came back up again, so pulled it in one more time and it blew the fuse again, ive checked the cabling going into the rear light and that looks ok (not chaffed) also under the batt box and the one going round the back panel but all wiring looks ok, long story short thinkin its a wiring issue (earthin) but I cant see it so off to a bike shop i go.....
