Yeah - and they both love a good thrashing
I bought a 'curvy' yellow 650 (the best shape & colour) in 2000 as my first bike. Once I had got rid of the cr@ppy Metzeler tyres, I began to learn how to ride it 'properly'. The best mods I made were a pair of Renegade cans & airbox - I even used to get compliments from Ducati riders on how good it sounded. It was a great bike, excellent for chucking around the back roads - the main thing that let it down was the suspension, however that can be sorted (you can either fit new springs/oil or go the whole hog and stick a gixxer front end on it!).
I swapped for a 1000 last year - I was offered a very good p/ex deal at a time when the 1000 wasn't going to get much cheaper, so I went for it.
The first time I road the thou, it frightened the bl00dy life out of me. The 650 felt (and sounded) quick, however the thou just accelerates soooo easily - just open the throttle and it takes off, whereas the 650 went a lot better if you knocked it down a cog or two. I have had the suspension on the thou tweaked by an Ohlins technician, which has made a difference - the bike now feels totally planted on bumps and bends. As it is a bigger bike, it still doesn't feel quite so chuckable as the 650. It is a lot more comfortable for pillions though.
Not sure whether you want a naked or faired version - I have not ridden a nakled 650, however had a naked 1000 for a day - that was a bit of a giggle, the wider bars made it a great laugh through the twisties, however over about 80 it was quite hard work
Ultimately, it depends on what you want from the bike and how long you have been riding for. If you are looking for your first 'proper' bike, then the 650 is great - very rideable (the new ones have adjustable front suspension and fuel injection - they are a bit kinfugly though  ) and there are plenty of mods you can do to make yours a bit different.
The thou does pretty much everything that the 650 does but better/quicker/faster - if you can't trust yourself (and have got points already) then go for the 650. If you can trust yourself (or have friends in very high places  ) then go for the thou.
See if you can get a test ride on both (try the 650 first).

Captain Nemo...........HOW DARE YOU?!
The new shape SVs are not a BIT 'Kinugly'.............They are a LOT 'kinugly'!
Seriously though, have not ridden the 1000 but understand that the heavier weight makes it feel a bit more of a tourer bike than the 650 as being less 'chuckable' makes it feel a little less sporty than the 650.
I could be wrong though, it has been known! :?
