View Full Version : Reevu helmet with rear mirror
Reevu helmet with rear mirror
Tried one of these at the ally pally, fitted well, and was inpressed with the rear view. It was quite a small mirror (made of plastic material not glass) and I felt it wouldnt distract too much.
I sat on a nearby bike with it on, and was impressed until I "tucked in" and it showed roof / sky.
Would be good on a non-sports bike where you sit fairly upright. Will wait until we get some reviews of the helmet and any ride noise
But it's the same with mirrors when you tuck, they're no use! I reckon the reevu would be excellent for filtering, when you want to check for bikes behind (or is that just me being slow??) but don't want to take tour eyes off the traffic in front.
There was a thread about this a week or so ago - see here:-

I tried one at the NEC, thought the image was poor. And even the bloke demonstrating it said no-one liked it!!
I think a CCTV system would be easier (and cheaper). Put a tiny camera near the taillight and a screen the size a gameboy in the fairing, but not sure how this would work for the naked brigade.

In deed i have, fitted each of the last 2 summers (monitor doesn't handle the winter well). someone (and I forget who) was talking about the Ducati MH900 concept bike and it's rearview system, so I said it should be possible to do that fairly cheaply.
Basically a 12v LCD Colour monitor, and a night & day weatherproof security camera.
the monitor isn't water proof and to stop the vibration I made a stand with just the right amount of flex in it, took a few trys to find out though, to stiff and the plastic case would crack, to flexable and the monitor would vibrate to much to view it properly.
the monitor I got off ebay for £40, it has an AV feed in also a white balance and image reverse switch (you need this otherwise left and right are the wrong way around).
the camera is a 9v weather proof job, brought from Maplins for £30.
it has a daytime colour output and has 30 IR LED's for a B&W nightime output. you have to make sure it has a fairly wide field of veiw and has AV out.
the power for the moniter was straight forward being standard 12v, althought the mounting did cover the Rev counter I never found it a problem, you could still see the idiot lights and speedo.
the camera however was run through a butcher car lighter socket inverter (you know the things you plug in your car for 3,6 or 9 volts) which cost about £3 or something like that, it was mounted just behind the left side pod and angled (after some trial and error) to give a central image.
a standard bonded 1.5M AV lead connected the two together.
Did it work ?
Well yes and surprisingly well, the camera stood up to all the ridding conditions as did the monitor (being housed behind the screen).
and was only removed (as I do most all my electrical mods) for the bad weather each year.
two drawbacks to this setup were found.
1. car headlights at night flare the screen within about 15 foot behind you, not a great problem.
2. in bright sunlight from behind you, the monitor was a little hard to see, you had to move your head to shadow it.
coolest thing, coming out of the oakdene at night, look in the mirrors total darkness, look at monitor and can see total detail like daytime for about 300yds behind.
Total cost was about £76 I think, under £80 I know.
the GPS in the picture covers the speedo, but you don't need one as the speedo is still clearly visable.

Bloody well done to you tho. And i'm only ever so slightly jealous now
Very Impressive - I'll put it on my wish list, after the crash mushrooms, and hugger.
