View Full Version : ZX636 shock
I've just bought this...
ZX636 shock (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7950512786&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT)
After much searchin and read though many forum entries I decided that it was my best choice for a new shock. Almost had a info overload, what with all the spring rates and lenghts to think about. But now it should be ariving tomorrow. Bike is all sat up and ready for me to start, after I've ceased the front brakes.

What one did you get?
I have one just like that, also sitting in the garage waiting to go on.
Be good to share some info on fitting and set up etc.
I will have to wait for a rainy weekend to fit mine, and ensure I have the whole weekend free, as I want to make the install as neat as factory where possible. I can't take the bike off the road mid week as its me only form of getting about. Bollox to buses........

Some general info and pics of the upgrade on the "not so curvy" model. Best of luck to ya. Hope it turns out well. Feel free to post impressions afterward. (I realize this is for a Gixxer shock, but the general info. is universal)

I do have a guide that some guy in the states did, I'll post it when I get home as its book marked on my home PC.

I got the earlier G model shokc, the one with the resevoir out of the back of the shokc, means the battery wont sit on top of it!
Still better though!! just the battery is on its side, and like you said, i think thats incorrect!!
Well mines at home waiting on my installation.. just need to free up sometime. Planning on ruling the world takes up alot of time.
Here's the guide that I found:
http://www.svrider.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=24059
I had found that too, it's not a bad guide, but I think there is room for improvement. I have heard that a taller and thinner R6 battery can be used, which frees up more space for the resevoir without needing to raise the battery. I'm probably gunna have a look at some different batteries, to try and turn something up that will work, then i can make a rubber strap to keep the battery in tight, and utilise the space where battery would normally be above the new resevoir to mount my fuses and relays on a bracket. That way everything will be roughly where it should be, easily acessible, retain the underseat storage, and won't be dangerous/a bodge job.
With any luck I might have the time to do this next week.....
And maybe even get some dogbones made up, whats typically a good height to shorten the dogbones too/raise the rear?
Dan.
Sounds like a plan.. PM me with any info you have, though I've not got anything on the dogbone lenght. But I know they normaly raise/lower the height by about 1 inch.

I'm 1/3rd way through doing a gixer600 k1-k3 shock. It's a bit fiddly, hope its worth it in the end. I used a standard bottom bolt but made a nut into a threaded bush to get enough thread engagement. Getting the battery to fit is tricky, I haven't sussed it yet. Might wait till tomoz and check out some different batteries, R6 taller thinner sounds good, didn't know about that, standard one is about 25mm too thick to fit now. Dunno about turning it on its side, acid spills? Battery/tank mount needed trimming a fair bit, under tray only needed a bit off. (mines a K1).

Have you done this yet? I've got mine now so i'm looking at what i'll need to get hold of to fit it in the way of bolts/nuts etc.

Yes, its in. The bottom shock bolt is the one which may cause problems, the gxr shock is slightly wider at the bottom mount than the sv. i sunk the standard nut nto the shock mount with a little machining but i' guessing thats not an option for ewe. The battery fit is very snug when put on its side, I made a little tray for it to sit on, trimmed the undertary/battery compartment a bit and relocated the fuses to the space underneath. Not tried the R6 battery idea yet as I'm too tight to try it then possibly find out it won't fit 8-) Ride height at the back is lower, by how much i'm not sure, about 10-15mm guestimated, recon shorter dog bones are needed really, its next on the to do list. Forks have been treated to 15w oil and spacers and feel miles better even in freezing conditions. It's a fiddly job, allow plenty of time! The srad shocks sound a lot easier to fit but finding a good un for low cash is more difficult, my K1 600 shock cost 22 quid including postage!

I've got myself a ZX636 shock. I'm guessing i'll need to hunt around for a suitable size bolt to fit the bottom. I'm assuming the top bolt isnt a problem and the bottom one is because the SV shock is threaded? So i'll need a bolt AND nut.

I've got the 636 shock to fit too and the above ismy understanding of it too. Need a nut and bolt and a bit of cutting to the battery compartment then jobs a good 'un.

And a suitably loobed up battery to squeeze it in..... Or a little jiggling about at least.
