View Full Version : Water/cylinder,etc
What is the legal standpoint on getting work done on the front cylinder after water has gotten in? I know its only a new plug+elbow grease, but my bike would`nt start for me today, running on one cylinder(it a ****in rain yesterday), there was some real odd sounds coming out of the engine, so I got the bike sent to a garage, just incase its somthing else.
Now I have absolutly no intention of paying for any work done on my bike, as its brand new, not even a year old(k4), so how did ye got on when it happend to you?

Not sure you helped your case too much by running it. If it happens again I would be inclined to run it with the plug removed to give the water a chance to get out rather than causing internal problems. Water doesn't compress very easily and can cause all sorts of difficulties.
As it happens I had an engine from a breaker that had sat for a while with the same problem. The whole of the front cylinder is badly rusted and now only suitable for the scrap or for a big bore kit.
Good luck!

If it's less that a year old, get it back to the dealers :!:
It's still under warrant... If it won't start, get them to recover it :!:

Yep, but usually it's only the plug that gets wet... And any water which did get into the system should quickly be cleared by routine running- it'll evaporate with the heat of the engine and get carried out with the exhaust gases, no?
With an engine that's sat it'd be different, of course, since once the water's in it won't get out.
I think the main problem I`ll have is the garage not willing to fork out for the repairs, I know its still under warrant, but I dont think they`ll see it that way, they`ll prob tell me its just a fowled plug and that it needed a service anyway.

Give them the benefit of the doubt. Let them do the serivce and change the plugs. Explain your concerns and request that if there is still a problem after the service then you expect them to do a more detailed investigation with a view to a warranty claim.
after a bit o hassle, i got the bike back, in the end it was a loose conection from the HT lead-or so I was told.
I was also told that there have been no reported mechanical failures on the new model sv650, so any probs like what I had would have to be electrical. Even the lad who came to collect the bike thought it was water in the front cylinder
ah well

The front-pot dropping out is an electrical fault... The wet plug leads to a bad spark. It's not the cylinder filling with rain, or anything...
