View Full Version : How long does it take to change a brake disc?

Hi,

I've just got the bill for my SV's MOT.

I went to my local dealer, despite having received better advice, for convenience sake as I've been very busy with work.

I just wanted to share this with the forum as I haven't paid yet and wondered whether I had any grounds for a little negotiation.

The MOT is 15.99. 2 Pirelli Diablos @ £230. 1 EBC front brake disc @ £120. Total ex labour/prep = £366 Total inc labour = £468

So, my question is:

a) Is 2 hours labour reasonable for fitting/MOT prep?

Fitting tyres and a brake disc can't take that long if you have the tools, can it?

Incidently, the brake disc had suddenly warped - suspect someone may have had a go at the disc lock or something.

 PS: One kidney for sale. FSH. Signs of wear from my student days but is a runner.

might have a sticky caliper which is overheating the disc, have a look at that as well

2 HOURS LABOUR seems ok but not at £51 an hour  £20 up here in cumbria.

Just the one disc on the front wheel? I'd have said 30 mins.

£468!! that`s more than my mortgage!!

You`ll always pay more for taking the easier route tho I guess, But that`s some money for getting through an MOT.

If you sourced the tyres yourself you could get them for around £150, takes about an hour to fit two tyres for a novice like myself. Probably £15 for a local MOT, about 15-20 minutes to change a disc even in your garden shed.

Still it`s nice to let someone else do all the faffing about for ya! And I guess I`m unique in having access to proper tyre fitting kit at my mate`s workshop.

I`d definitley give the pistons a quick clean and regrease the pads and pins too.

And check the bolts are tight even if it was all done by a dealer!

About 10mins, what is it about 15-16 alan key bolts. Trouble is there maybe there is a mini labour charge of 1 hr.
If the bike isn't under warrenty anymore, why not have a go yourself next time.
