While it was impressive.. I got tired of the storry every five minutes. By the time I left for work I was sick of it, and I only saw half a hour of telly.

I voted impressive.

Kudos to anyone who can follow their dreams. May be boring to other people, but then some people don't understand why you ride bikes. Each to their own ey!

I agree with that. But i voted "waste of time", not for her as it was a dream of hers, but for all the time the press etc has spent on it.

I'd like to do a world tour by bike, but my dream will never happen :(

I voted to get her to do another lap.
All very impressive and stuff, like people have said, but there's a limit to how much I really care about somebody I don't know doing stuff like that.

I don't find it that interesting per-say, but respect to anyone who pushes boundaries.

She's better off in the middle of nowhere so we don't have to look at her.

I was dead chuffed that she got the WORLD record... not the 'womens' world record.

ACE job that girl!

I'm glad there are people out there who'll throw their lot in to the Big Adventure. Without them, what are bothering with our lives for? Life's there to be lived. Boundaries are there to be pushed. :D

And let's not forget, she beat the French, it's worth it just for that what with this year being the 200th anniversary of Trafalgar and all :D

Impressive defnately, but spoilt by having the media ram it down our throats constantly. She sailed round the world not saved the universe.

Fed up with this 'Great nation' knocking their own people. Maggots the f@#king lot of them.

People have always sought to push the limits of endurance; and as Ping so rightly says - she took the world record, not the women's record.

What, you mean private sponsorship? Nowt wrong with that. I'd expect the sponsorship is one of the main reasons it's being hyped too. No doubt she's proud, as she should be, but the publicity is probably being stired up but B&Q, not her.

"Do something productive."

The world would be a very boring place if we only ever did what we had to and never what we wanted, don't you think?

Besides, anything that progresses technological advancement tends to have spin off benefits so saying the whole thing is time wasting and unproductive is probably rather short sighted.

thats true, I think from a mental point of view that must be quite something to do spend 71 days at sea on your own, but how important is it in the grand scheme of things

Makes a change though for the british press to big up a minority sport

She is competing against anybody and everybody who wants to give it a shot. They just aren't all starting at the same time.

Deffo amazing. She's not some Yank, she's British - shows we do things well here. I think it's something to be proud of. Yes it cost a lot of money - but the dosh was never going to be spent on something 'worthwhile' - whatever that might mean. Yes it's on TV too much. But the achievement is tremendous. Well done I say.

She was trying to beat the previous world record, so it is a competition. Someone else will probably now compete to beat her time. Just because they don't all compete at the same time doesn't mean that it's not a sport.

But this is what the media do, they report it and report it and report it till everybodies sick of it and then nobody cares anymore and they've sucked the life out of it

I'm impressed by the achievement, and the capability of someone to follow their dreams to that extent... but I'm dissapointed by the selfishness. :(

Ewan and Charley go off round the world, they televise it for the money to allow them to do the trip and gain sponsorship etc. But, they also raised awareness of the work Unicef was doing in parts of the country that don't really get world news coverage.
They had something, and they used it for the betterment of others.

I remember seeing a spot on some programme ages ago about a charity which teaches disabled and disadvantaged kids to sail. I think it focussed on a group of kids with Downs Syndrome and said how much of a kick they got out of working as a team.
McCarthy has achieved her goal, and recieved the glory... lets see if she uses it, then she'll get my respect,

The thing that gets me is the fact that she did it SOLO
I dont agree she did.

With the technology on board the boat she could speak tp peeps back home on videophones etc. Have some human interaction.

I'm sure the first sailor to do this solo didnt have the ability to see and speak to loved ones to help them get over the mental part of such a task.

A bit like that david blane stunt of sitting in a box and not eating etc for however long it was (no i wasnt interested  ). But he had the world passing by so he was kept mentaly stimulaeted and it helped him to get thru his task.
Now if he'd sat in his plastic box in a white room and a small camera filming him it would have been worth watching.

She did something a lot of people cant do, but so do lots of other people in more meaningful ways everyday.
I'd rather see B&Q sponsor a homelessness initative and pot their name to that than a big boat that didnt actually o all the way round anyway.

Its not her i'm knocking (i'd like to go to space on day but that'll never happen) its the fact that the media is expected to make a big deal of it so they do. if they didnt ... they get knocked. Its silly innit?

And they made her a Dame??

OH C'MON NOW.

And it sure aint worthy of being headline news above the Palestinian and Israeli's shaking hands on a ceasfire after the last 4 years of totally pointless killings.
