....more of a nasty grind this one.

If I let the clutch out just a touch too quickly when moving off from stationary I get a horrible highpitched grindy noise which sounds like it's coming from the gearbox (?). It stops as I ease of the throttle, and doesn't seem to affect riding otherwise, but is a little concerning nevertheless.

Any ideas?

Mine too..... thought it may stop when new chain and sprockets were fitted but it's still there sometimes....

Not normal that one. Mine doesnt do it. Would recommend getting your clutch plates checked out. Does it need adjusting? What mileage has yours done?

I've made some funny noises pulling off before, but that was when i was more concerned with the icy road and forgot to change down the gears! Ended up pulling off in 3rd or 4th!!!

Definitely from the gearbox? I sometimes get a horrible noise which seems to come from the cush drive. Tends to happen when trying to set off sharpish but without loads of revs.
(Trying to be cool in other words  )

Does it happen hot and cold? Does the engine temperature affect the problem?

I repaired an SV some while ago that exhibited a similar problem to the one I think you are describing, if the problem is felt just in the final part of the clutch lever's movement as you release it, it points to the release bearing. the mushroom headed thrust face was distorted badly, most likely from being poorly adjusted.

Yes actually I think it is mostly when the engine is cold now I think about it

..and yes when the clutch is very nearly fully released!

Should I be urgently seeking a remedy or can this wait until I put bike in for service?

That sounds exactly like what my bike does. I tried to describe it in an earlier post. My bike only has 13k on it. Last week I adjusted the clutch under the side sprocket cover and all seemed well. Then yesterday I went to pull away real fast (uphill) and the noise was there again. Mostly happens when the engine is cold, but yesteday it was hot? Weird.
