I am posting an account of my experience with Cissbury Leathers
because I know that some members of sv650.org use them, see, for
example, the thread http://forums.sv650.org/viewtopic.php?t=16758.
On 11 January (exactly 1 month ago) I ordered a pair of Akito Viper
boots from the Cissbury Leathers website http://www.cissburyleathers.com/,
price £34.99 + £6 delivery. On 12 January I got an email saying that
there will be a delay of 7 days because the boots are out of stock.
I patiently waited until 6 February when I emailed Cissbury Leathers
asking what is going on. No reply. Emailed again on 8 February. No
reply. Phoned twice on 10 February and was told that the person
responsible for internet sales will call me back. Nobody did.
Finally, today, 11 February, I managed to get through to someone who
promised to refund the payment to my credit card (remains to be
seen).
The amazing thing is that Cissbury Leathers continue offering these
boots on their website, see
http://www.cissburyleathers.com/products.asp?Currency=GBP&Cat=1&Man=15
They are happy to take our money knowing that they don't have the goods.
PS. I must add that this sort of thing appears to be getting more
common in e-commerce. On 5 February I ordered a wireless modem
router bundle from http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/.
They took the money and only yesterday (10 February) admitted that
they don't have the goods. I wasted 5 days. With another retailer I would
have had the router by now. Awaiting yet another refund.
Your right, it is becoming more common with internet stores now, I rely on the ones I know are good and give stock details on the site now unless I hear a good recommendation of a site..

Yes, it is always a good sign when the web site tells you how many items
are actually in stock. Unfortunately, few e-retailers give this information.
And sticking to tried e-retailers is also a good idea. Only in this case it was
my first go at buying motorcycle gear over the internet and Cissbury
Leathers seemed respectable enough.
It really is very naughty of them to charge your card before despatching the goods, let alone realising they don't actually have any in stock!

I think that it might also be illegal as well
You should report them to trading standards

Bloody Internet!
Im sorry to hear about your troubles. I have ordered a couple of things from Cissbury leathers in the past and they were fine. Must admit it is pretty annoying waiting for things you have ordered without proper communication. Hope you get it sorted soon.

get onto your credit card company and explain the situation - they'll pull the funds back from the store.

 This will also completely shaft their rating with their current card services supplier, leading to lots of questions and possible investigations into fraud.
Do it!
You think that if 2000 of us did it and waiting 5 days and then got a refund, the amount of interest they would make on that money, would be very nice, thanks very much and all for Free!

I checked out the Trading Standards website
http://www.tradingstandards.gov.uk/
and could not find a way of submitting a complaint. They only give you
the phone number of your local Trading Standards officer (via your
postcode). I don't see how a local government official from Trowbridge
can deal effectively with a company that is not local.
I am too lazy to report Cissbury Leathers to my credit card company,
as long as I indeed get a refund.
The fact that Cissbury Leathers functioned well in the past doesn't
mean that they aren't having problems now. A few years ago I ordered
some furniture from a retailer called, as far as I recall, World of
Leather. At the time World of Leather outlets were functioning fine,
no sign of trouble. Switched on the telly a month later and there it
was on the news having gone bust. Fortunately, I paid for my
furniture by credit card so the credit card company refunded me the
full amount. Since then I pay for all major purchases by credit card
as opposed to debit card, even if it involves a credit card fee.
The smart thing to do would be to open an internet shop myself,
selling non-existent goods. Close shop a month later and flee to a
country that doesn't extradite to the UK. I would do it straight
away if I weren't so busy marking exam papers.
Its funny as I've always had no problems with them when at the shop... even get nice 10% discounts as I'm a SOC memeber, might want to write the owner a letter first.
I have to say that the title "Beware of Cissbury leathers" is somewhat unfair. Yes they made a mistake and their admin ain't perfect. But I bet there are plenty of people who've had good service from them. It wasn't a scam, it was an error.

Trying to be fair to Cissbury Leathers I have just checked the sizes
of Akito Vipers they are currently selling. They are continuing to
sell my size 8 knowing well that they haven't had them for at least
a month. Administrative oversight?
Not replying to my emails and not returning my phone calls also an oversight?
The moderator is welcome to change the title of my post to something
politically correct or to delete my post completely if I am seen as being
unfair.

Have you tried 'reading the Riot Act' and demanded to speak with the manager? Rather than one of the lesser lights? :?

Dear Moderator,
Please change the title of my post from Beware of Cissbury Leathers
to Certain problems with a certain retailer. I don't know how to do it
myself.
Yours faithfully,
Professor
PS. May I also suggest that we appoint a Political Correctness Tsar on
sv650.org.
PPS. I didn't try speaking to the manager. My goal was minimal - just
getting my money back. I just don't have the time to pursue grander
objectives. Maybe someone younger should undertake this.

Apparently, according to UK law one cannot be sued for expressing an opinion.

Not entirely correct. But thats another story!
The only option is to speak to the head honcho or, if you cant be bothered, forget about it!

Get on the phone to your credit card company, it is no hassle honestly. I had a similar problem with a company. IIRC I had to fill out a form but the credit card company refunded my money very quicky, let them deal with it.

Done.

Yeah right. C'mon prof, let's cool down and think about this. Would you rreally want CL to take legal action against SV650.org and endanger the viability of the whole forum?
I just don't have the time to pursue grander objectives.
Then why the post?

I know that my credit card company will reimburse me and that the
hassle is minimal. But now that the "certain" retailer has promised to
refund me, assuring that the refund will show up on my card by Tuesday,
I'd rather wait. This seems to be the path of least resistance.
In the case of World of Leather the situation was different. It was obvious
that they won't be delivering anything or refunding anything (this was all
over the news) so I filled in the appropriate form. I think it was
called "Declaration of conflict" or something like that.
I am glad to see that political correctness has taken over the biking
community and that the title of my post has been edited. Having lived
in a totalitarian state most of my life I always enjoy seeing these things
happen in Western Democracies.

As per your request, though I reserved the right to make it less provocative.

Never had a problem with Cissbury... But Arlen Ness leathers.... That's a different story, and seeing as they're the UK distributor......
Arlen Ness - great looking and comfortable biking atire, just don't expect the zips to last...
Sorry :offtopic:

Only caught up with this thread.
The boots I ordered were delivered with no problems within a matter of days.
I had also ordered a Sidi beanie to take the price over £100 to get free
P & P, this was out of stock as stated on the delivery receipt that I received with the boots. They said it would be with me by the end of Jan. and, if memory serves me right, it was delivered on 29th - 30th.
So my experience of Cissbury leathers is good and I would do business with them again without hesitation.
If I was in your situation I would be annoyed at the lack of feedback from them, ok, no one wants to wait ages on delivery but at least if they keep you informed as to a realistic delivery date then it may put your mind at ease.
Unfortunate, but these things happen (to us all from time to time).
