I'm sure there are many reasons why a bike would fall over and feel we may all learn something from this thread to prevent this happening.

So has your bike fallen over and what did you learn from this :?:

Me as a bikeless newbie, certainly will take in lessons learnt.

Sv hasn't but I had a cg fall over once. Was just ice that thawed overnight and the bike fell over.

Not my SV. I've havent dropped a bike in more than 2 years.

I did drop my old, heavy bike once when i hadnt put out the side stand fully then tried to rest it down.

not to me on any of my bikes... but then Ive never owned a Ducati...

apparently it was common on older ones that the side stand could flip up...

My CB500 blew off its stand, parked on a slope. And my brother's Kawasaki fell over inexplicably when it was on my drive - spent a couple of hours gluing the indicator lens back together after that - but my SV has never fallen off its stand.

No but I've seen someone else's roll forward down a hill of its side stand.

I bet that's the last time that person parked on a hill without leaving it in gear.

My SV fell off it's stand about a week after I bought it!

Was just after I washed it and been moving it about, so not sure if it was because the stand wasn't fully down or cos it is was in neutral and moved slightly on the soapy drive way etc.

Anyway, since then I am automatically in the habit of double kicking down the side stand and always stop the bike in gear. No problems since.

I think the general concensus would be 1.make sure the stand is fully down 2.Try and park on level ground 3. If you have to park on a slope park the bike facing up the slope in gear 4. NEVER lean the bike stand side in the direction of any slope,it will fall over promise
They are not the best stands in the world so take every precaution you can

The only things I have learn't is:

Put the side stand down properly and double check when parked on uneven ground.

Yup, but I'd parked it pointing down a fairly steep slope, like an idiot, and I'm not even totally sure it was down properly  Ever since, I just give the bike a wee wobble before I leave it to be sure it's safe.

It was the last time I parked on a hill in front of them as well didn't mention that the bike nearly took mine out.

mine fell just as i was about to get on her.

i'd not even touched the bike when suddenly it was coming towards me.

I then remember being pinned between the SV and my old RS250 and the petrol tank of the SV giving me a dead leg.

managed to get the bike upright and get the stand under it again but i know if the RS wasn't there I'd have gone under the bike.

i did drop mine properly after 2 days of owning it trying to open my front gate by leaning over the front of the bike, lost balance and down we went.

Mine fell over after I put the side stand down and left the engine running. Just walked away when I heard a crash and looked round to see the bike spinning round on the floor as when it went down, it knocked itself into gear
Dropped it a couple of times by leaving the disc lock on as well

First thing to do with an sv is to change the front indicators for smaller ones as they're the first thing to touch down when the bike goes over and they invariably crack the surrounding fairing

Love at first sight?!

The SV has never fallen, and I'm extra careful with the ZX as the stand is really tiny and tucked right under the foot peg. £%$&**^%& akward thing!

I did have it happen to my NSR125 two days before I was due to trade it in for my GPz500 (just after passing my test).

Gravel drive + a night of heavy rain = soft underneath. Put it on the stand, turned my back to shut the garage door and heard a crunch.
The next 24 hours were spent with the bike on it's side in the kitchen (supported by two dining room chairs) whilst I repaired the cracks in the fairing and replaced a small missing bit with araldite!
Hey, it sprayed up quite well and was probably stronger than the rest of the fairing... and the shop never noticed.
(I soooo wanted that GPz for the first time I wasn't 'completely' honest... I didn't lie, I just didn't tell them. I would have owned up if they noticed!)

What I took away from that experience is that I now always give the tank a little tug once the stand is down, just before I leave the bike... just to make sure it's planted solidly down.

OK, OK, so sometimes I'm a little paranoid and give a couple of tugs...

... alright, sometimes more than a couple.

FINE, I have been known to walk away and then go back to the bike to double check. But I've only done that twice.

i was on mine and parked it infront of the girlfriends house on a narrow concrete path between the windows and garden thought put the stand down fully.but i hadnt it rolled forward a bit and fell to the left on the grass!! not a scratch and the footpegs took at the concrete impact.

my last bike fell off its centre stand once when i parked on some cheap tarmac, went to work and the sun (remember that) softened it and it fell breaking the indicator and clutch lever , the rac took me home

If i'm cleaning or working on the bike, I always bungee the sidestand to the frame to stop it from folding up if I push it...

OF.uk, totally agree about the indicators, they end up acting like hammers if the bike falls on something soft

fortunately i've never lost her on the stand. a friend however has told me his gsxr750 revved itself off its stand. fired it up, went indoors to get his jacket and lid, came back just in time to see it a tumblin'.

therefore i voted "no"

Guy at work moved my SV650S, with disc lock attached(!) without telling me and didn't get it back on the stand properly. Went to remove the disc lock in the dark and down she went. Bill so far stands at £585.00 as it's a non standard paint job; been in the shop for 3 weeks already waiting for parts and will be at least another 2 waiting for the paint shop. Work is picking up the tab at least but still well dis-chuffed.

Came off my bike at the SV meet at Boxhill last Autumn, breaking the clutch lever and gear shift. Managed to ride home though.

Got the bike repaired, and decided to clean it as soon as it was rideable and to lube the chain, and go for a long awaited ride. I got talking to my wife at the door as I moved it forward, and obviosuly didn't put the stand down properly. Down it went and broke.............

........the clutch lever and gear shift!!!!!

Oh blast!

my favourite story was one facing down a steep hill (fool)
another was on my drive way.

to be honest though there's always been one common factor, ME, knocking it or pushing it or comething else stupid like that
