just been looking at the jhs racing web site and noticed they do a swing arm which allows you to fit a 180 section rear tyre. has anybody fitted one and does it work ok?

how different is the sv1000 swing arm?

Can they be fitted to the sv650?

A few poeple have successfully used a 5.5" rear wheel without changing the swingarm.
You'll need a wheel and custom spacers made, may need to change the chain size but don't quote me.

Any of the custom shops will be able to do this for you, Polygon, TES, etc

I approached JHS about this arm he offers some time ago but he seemed more interested in talking me out of it than selling me one. Then he went on to tell me he didn't stock them it would have to be made and would cost twice the adverised price. I've looked at few alternatives but after comparing a 180 sec on an SRAD and measuring it wasn't any wider than my road pilots tho' the tread was a rounder profile and almost met the rims.

Why do you actually want one ??

whenever i go to the superbikes or a trackday there are always racers selling part worn 180 section rear tyres for next to nothing + there must be some advantage over using a 180 section tyre over a 160. Also i think it would look pretty sexy too!

There would be an advantage - IF the bike's chassis & geometry were designed to use a 180 section rear! I can't imagine it'd help much!

If you want to buy cheap race rubber (which won't last long or get up to proper operating temperatures on the road), then go to a round of the MiniTwins!

It costs about a tenner to get in and there's loads & loads of teams flogging off their stuff! specifically from the SVs they use in the championship! Surely that would be a far better, cheaper & easier option!!??

thats why i asked the question.... there is really no benefit other than looks on the sv to using a 180... it'll just degrade your cornering ability

As far as I've been told this is right.

To get the same feeling fo aving a 180 section tyre on the back of your SV, take 20psi out of your rear tyre

The money that you sould spend on the new swing arm etc, would out weigh the saving in rear tyres over a 5 year period!!

Id admit, it would look kool, but its a bit vein

There's a spacer kit available to mount a CBR F3 rear wheel, it's 5 inch... Not a huge difference but a fraction the cost. You could do much the same with any wheel with a compatible or larger axle, as long as it physically fits and you can get the chain and brakes to work with it...

But the only reason, unless it's a seriously modified bike, is because you like big fat tyres... One of the reasons the SV handles so well as stock is because of the unfashionably narrow rubber.
