View Full Version : Cheap helmets
Hope this fits in idle banter :? . If not, sorry Ian
I've just bought one of these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=4525579688&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT even though the auction has finished, if you phone their shop they'll still do the same deal. Seems lika a bargain for anyone looking for a decent, cheap helmet. Only available in size 59/60cm though.
HTH
I don't think you could go wrong there. It seems a decent helmet at a bargain price.
Maybe a good option as a 2nd helmet for going to certain places that you maybe wouldn't want to take the risk of getting the good 1 stolen etc??
Pity about the 1 size only though.
I, in the future, will probably be looking helmets for my 2 sons, and whilst I don't want to scrimp on their safety, I think something like these helmets would fit the bill. I'm only intending on taking them "round the block" as they say. Obviously longer runs would require full gear for them.
They have them in a smaller size in red I believe
Well, helmet arrived today. Looks good, a bit tight but I'm sure it will bed in with use. Even got a free helmet bag :D .
Will try it out this weekend for noise and waterproofness.

I've got a Nitro, which I think is the same thing, and it seems fine. It's ACU Gold approved so it makes me onder what you get extra if you pay two or three hundred for a lid, aprt from an indorsement from some highly paid racer.

ACU doesn't mean it's any safer.
All helmets had to pass the BS (now the EC standards are used) to be legal.
On top of that, a helmet can be put forward for the markings that the ACU give.
These basically specify features about the helmet that are required or not allowed. The only example I can think of is that seatbelt type clips aren't allowed on dirt bike helmets because they fill with mud and don't work.
Anyway, the point is that an ACU mark doesn't mean a helmet is safer, it just means it's allowed to be worn in competition.
When you pay more for a helmet you may well get a safer helmet but once you pass a certain point you're mostly only getting quality (ie, the vents keep working, visor doesn't scratch) and comfort.
Oh, and just remembered, when the BS standards were used there were two grades. Pretty much all the lids over about £80 were the better one (can't remember what colour that was) and most of the cheap ones were the lower. Nowadays we only have one standard.
I tend to spend around the £150 mark because I get a good balance of quality and price. I find myself wearing the helmet for very long periods of time, so maybe for less regular riders a cheaper helmet would be just as comfortable.

Btw, that last post only really applies to helmets in the UK (and most of the EC)
I don't know anything about DOT regulations regarding helmets.
i got a takachi TK100 helmet for £60 quid with P and P included off ebay. Brand new, they had 60 odd in stock. Its the most comfortable helmet I've ever had and I feel extremely safe in it. Cant go wrong really.
i retract my statement, dont buy these helmets, it came off my head when i crashed and left me with a few nice scar

I tried on a Takachi helmet when I was originally looking for one and I couldnt beleive how cheap and nasty if felt compared to the KBC VR-7 that I ended up buying...

I went down the A2 at about 70mph and the Takachi TK50 (I think - had 50 in the name somewhere...) did very well. Looked like it had been attacked by a chimp wielding an angle grinder, but I was fine. Maybe it depends on the type of accident.
Hi,
I bought Takachi TK 86 N (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&item=350143931478) flip front, as I never had flip front one, and I wondered how it is like...
First impression was Wow!! how this helmet looks like!!! ( but then remembered that it doesn't matter how helmet looks like, but how good it is...)
Ive put my new helmet on my head and felt wird...
I think it's just to get used to it...
I went for a ride and was little bit windy.. :/
I had before full face helmet and wasn't so windy...
But then next question appeared : Does this helmet will give me full protection? It's flip front...so will hinges brake...?? :(
This HELMET costs me only L80....!!!
Example:
https://www.jsaccessories.co.uk/view_detail.php?cat_code=Takachi%20TK-86N%20Flip%20Helmet
and I start thinking to return it...:(
What do you think about it??
I can spend even L150-200 for helmet, but I want to be sure that its high quality...!!!
P.S
I'm not only riding in city (mostly, but from time to time I do long tours 300-500 miles) ....

2005 lol
That Takachi TK 86 N looks exactly like my Nitro, except blacker. Not surprising considering they are operated by the same company (http://www.v-s-j.com/) I suppose.
